Deutsches Ärzteblatt International
INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS
GENERAL
Deutsches Ärzteblatt publishes material relating to health and social policy, on all aspects of medical activity and health care (health and social policy department, see 1), as well as reviews, original research, case reports, short forms of Clinical Practice Guidelines (S3 level), and editorials on clinical medicine and medical science, including health services research (medical scientific department, see 2). Any material submitted for potential publication in Deutsches Ärzteblatt must be submitted exclusively to Deutsches Ärzteblatt, and may not have been previously published, either in Germany or abroad.
1. SUBMISSIONS FOR THE HEALTH AND
SOCIAL POLICY SECTION
Submissions for the health and social policy section of the journal must be no more than 2000 words. We advise that you use the maximum length only exceptionally and after discussion with the editorial team. Articles for the health and social policy section do not require a structured format, such as that required for the medical scientific section. Please observe the referencing style outlined in 2.2. The health and social policy department reserves the right to publish references on the web only, independently of length. Editors from our health and social policy section select letters for publication and reserve the right to shorten them. The regulations described in sections 3 and 4 of this document refer to all articles submitted to Deutsches Ärzteblatt. The number of authors is limited to between three and a maximum of six.
2. SUBMISSIONS FOR THE MEDICAL SCIENTIFIC
SECTION
The medical scientific section is aimed at all doctors of all specialties, whether office-based or hospital-based. Submitted manuscripts should be clinically relevant, and written in a clear and accessible style. All articles, including commissioned work, will be sent out for external peer review, to at least two reviewers. Initial editorial assessment usually takes around a week. We
endeavour to complete the peer review process within four weeks while the time from submission to publication is currently around 3 months. Our regulations comply with the Recommendations of the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholary Work in Medical Journals of 2018 (www.icmje.org), which are published by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. Deutsches Ärzteblatt is a member of this committee. The medical scientific section, along with the complete editorial part of the journal, appears in the print version of Deutsches Ärzteblatt and in an online version at www.aerzte blatt.de. In addition, all articles and correspondence from the medical scientific section are translated into English and published in the open access journal Deutsches Ärzteblatt International (www.aerzteblatt-international.de). There are no article processing charges for authors. Readers may view, download, print, copy and distribute articles and correspondence for personal use. Commercial use of articles or correspondence published in Deutsches Ärzte blatt International is prohibited without written authorization by the journal. Deutsches Ärzte blatt International is listed in the following databases: MEDLINE, PubMed, PubMed Central, Science Citation Index, Web of Knowledge, EMBASE, Scopus, PsycINFO, and CINAHL. The current impact factor is: 4.796 (2-year value), 5.046 (5-year value) according to the Journal Citation Report 2019. Please submit medical scientific articles via the following internet address: www.editorialmanager.com/daeb.
2.1 TYPES OF ARTICLE AND REQUIREMENTS
ORIGINAL RESEARCH, REVIEW ARTICLES, AND CLINICAL PRACTICE GUIDELINES (S3 LEVEL)
Maximum length 2300 words without counting the abstract and 40 references (see 2.2), plus up to five illustrations, diagrams, or tables. Articles may be submitted in English, but must be translated into German by the authors after acceptance. Should the team of authors not include a German native speaker, it may be possible for translations to be made or commissioned by the editorial team.
– Original research articles should be presented using an IMRAD (introduction, methods, results, and discussion) format. If the word limit of 2300 words proves insufficient, thematically grouped subsections (for example elements from the methods section, or tables) may be submitted as additional internet supplements. All clinical studies should be registered in a public database before recruitment (https://www.wma.net/policies-post/wma-declaration-of-helsinki -ethical-principles-for-medical-research-involving-humansubjects).
In addition to the ICMJE’s general recommendations, we draw your attention in particular to the following guidelines on the presentation of par ticular forms of scientific article:
www.aerzteblatt.de/pdf.asp?id=145667 (case reports)
www.strobe-statement.org/ (observational studies)
www.prisma-statement.org/ (systematic reviews and metaanalyses)
www.consort-statement.org/ (randomized controlled trials)
www.equator-network.org/reporting-guidelines/stard/(diagnostic studies)
www.equator-network.org/ (original research articles)
– Review articles should outline a concrete question, and must include a section detailing the method used in compiling the article (for example, details of the literature search).
– Clinical practice guidelines (S3 level): Occasionally and after discussion with the editorial office, Deutsches Ärzteblatt publishes versions of S3 guidelines which have been specially tailored to the journal (See Information sheet: Extended instructions to authors for authors of guidelines, www.aerzte blatt.de/merkblatt_leitlinie [in German]). These manuscripts must conform to our instructions for authors of original scientific articles and review articles.
