Instructions for Authors

Types of Papers

It is the policy of Techniques in Coloproctology (TCOL) to ensure balance, independence, objectivity and scientific rigor in the journal. All authors are expected to disclose to the readers any real or apparent conflict of interest that may have a direct bearing on the subject matter of the article. It is mandatory for any type of paper to publish a conflict statement in the article itself, and to submit the conflict disclosure form in addition (you can find the form on the journal’s homepage on springer.com).

Reviews (including meta-analysis)

Reviews (including meta-analysis)

Should have abstract and keywords. The abstract does not need to be structured for the reviews; for the meta-analysis can be structured or non-structured. The article should comprise a maximum of 4000 words and 120 references. Meta-analyses will also be considered as long as they follow the instructions for reviews.

Original papers

Should have a structured abstract and keywords, must not exceed 3,000 words and may include up to 8 illustrations and 8 tables. Each separate part of a figure (a, b, etc.) counts as an illustration. Up to 45 references are permitted.

Short communications

Should have a structured abstract and keywords and should include brief original studies or techniques with a small number of cases. They should not exceed 1500 words; 4 illustrations and up to 15 references are permitted.

Technical notes

Should have a abstract and keywords. Technical notes include description of a new surgical technique and its application on a small number of cases. In case of a technique representing a major breakthrough one case will suffice. Follow-up and outcome need to be clearly stated. Abstracts do not need to be structured, manuscript they should not exceed 2000 words; 8 illustrations and up to 10 references.

Controversies in Colorectal Surgery

No abstract and no keywords. include critical comments on current trends as well as the pros and cons of a diagnostic or therapeutic modality. The contribution is usually accompanied by an invited comment from an expert. An article may be assigned to this category by the Editor.

Correspondence

No abstract and no keywords. They must not exceed 800 words and 5 references with 2 tables or figure They should be addressed to the Editor-in-Chief. Submitted letters will be subject to shortening and editorial revision.

Last Image.

No abstract and no keywords. This section publishes high quality photographs illustrating innovative or unusual therapeutic techniques. Facultative text of maximum 80 words, a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 9 pictures with legends.

Multimedia articles

Require abstract and keywords. They are original articles where the video plays a major role. Just like original articles must not exceed 3,000 words and should include up to 8 illustrations and 8 tables. Up to 45 references are permitted. See instructions for videos as supplementary material

Video Forum

Are videos with a short (up to 1500 words) description. No abstract and no keywords, up to 5 references. See instructions for videos as supplementary material

Web reviews

are reviews of website related to the practice of colon and rectal surgery and/or treatment of colorectal diseases. No abstract needed. Reviews should not exceed 1,000 words and up to 2 illustrations.

Book Reviews

 

are reviews of book related to treatment of colorectal diseases. No abstract needed. Reviews should not exceed 1,000 words and up to 2 illustrations.

Challenges in Coloproctology

Require abstract and keywords. They are focused reviews on hot topics in coloproctology. Maximum 3000 words and 50 references.

Cochrane Digest

No abstract and no keywords. They are usually assigned by editors. They include comments on the latest Cochrane reviews on colon and rectal surgery.

Technical Advances

Require structured or non-structured abstract, keywords. They are articles describing newer techniques or technologies applied to colon and rectal surgery. Up to 1500 words and no limits of tables, figures and references.

Editorial

No abstract and no keywords. Are assigned by the Editors. Editorial should not exceed approximately 1500 words and 10 references.

Invited Comment

No abstract and no keywords. Are assigned by edotors. They should not exceed 800 words and 5 references.

Author’s Reply

No abstract and no keywords. Authors are be offered the opportunity of replying to comments concerning their article accepted in the journal. Reply will be ideally published alongside the comment. They should not exceed 600 words and 5 references.

Congress Report

No abstract and no keywords. Are articles reporting on a congress pertaining colon and rectal diseases.

We no longer accept case reports. Some of the material previously published in the category Case Report may fit the categories of Correspondence, Technical Note, or Last Image

Manuscript Submission

Submission of a manuscript implies: that the work described has not been published before; that it is not under consideration for publication anywhere else; that its publication has been approved by all co-authors, if any, as well as by the responsible authorities – tacitly or explicitly – at the institute where the work has been carried out. The publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation.

Permissions

Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) for both the print and online format and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors.
