Submission guidelines

Instructions for Authors

Announcing Continuous Article Publishing

As of 2018, Aquatic Sciences will change its publication structure from paginated issues to a consecutive publishing model: Continuous Article Publishing.

This means that papers will be published in a volume/issue immediately after acceptance. The Online First queue will become obsolete and the time from submission to publication in an issue will be significantly shorter. This will give published articles full citation details instantly after online publication.

As a further aspect of the new system, articles will no longer be paginated sequentially by issue. Therefore, every article will start with page number 1. Page numbers will not be used for article citation but every article will have a citation ID number, called the ArticleCitationID. The ArticleCitationID will replace the page numbers in the citation line, which will now include the journal citation title, year, volume number and ArticleCitationID.

Example:

Old: Aquat Sci (2017) 79:208-220

New: Aquat Sci (2018) 80: 123

This method of citation is accepted by the Web of Science/Journal Citation Reports (ISI).

We feel that our authors and readers will greatly benefit from this change in the publication structure of Aquatic Sciences.

Types of papers

Research Articles: These are contributed articles that should describe, interpret and discuss results of original research, ranging from mechanistic studies on a molecular basis to studies on an ecosystem scale. In the chapter “Discussion”, the significance of the study to the field of aquatic sciences should be stressed. Aquatic Sciences welcomes manuscripts integrating field studies, laboratory work and mathematical modelling. Papers presenting new ideas and hypotheses, based on observations and first results, are included in Aquatic Sciences as well. These “hypothesis papers” also should describe the type of experiments needed to verify proposed hypotheses. Research articles should not be longer than 8 printed pages. This accounts for approx. 870 words (or 4700 characters, plain text without spaces) per printed page. Figures and tables have to be counted in addition. General structure: We suggest that these manuscripts include an “Abstract”, an “Introduction”, a “Materials and Methods” section, a “Results” section and “Discussion”. The “Discussion” section should include the special mention of the significance of the work to the field of aquatic sciences. The “Results” and “Discussion” sections may be combined as “Results and Discussion”. Each section may contain subsections. Deviation from this general style is permitted if it improves the clarity of presentation.

Overview and Review Articles: These are contributed articles that should focus on cutting-edge research questions. Review articles should provide a synthesis of the state-of-the-art in a particular field incorporating cross-boundary research, whereas overview articles should discuss studies performed among several research groups and institutions or give an overview of one’s own interdisciplinary research. Overview and review articles may be longer than 14 printed pages and do not to follow the general style of research articles (see below, “Format of Manuscripts”). In addition to comprehensive overviews and reviews, Aquatic Sciences also publishes short critical reviews. These articles should articulate future directions in fields transcending traditional disciplines and approaches. General structure: Overview or Review Articles should be divided into sections and, if necessary, subsections, similarly to book chapters, however, without numbering the sections and subsections. An abstract is optional.

Water Policy Articles: These are contributed articles that should present research at the interface of natural sciences, social sciences, and public policy. They should describe developments and suggest trends in the sustainable management of local and global water systems, and provide relevant information to policy makers and governments. Water policy articles may be longer than 14 printed pages and do not need to follow the general style of research articles General structure. Water Policy Articles: These articles should be organized in a different way than research articles. They are divided into sections and, if necessary, subsections, similarly to book chapters, however, without numbering the sections and subsections. An abstract is optional.

Special Feature: Articles in this section are commissioned by the Editors/Editorial Board Members of Aquatic Sciences. Special Feature articles need not cover fully original work by the authors, but instead can review or synthesize a body of work. Special feature articles are expected to stimulate research and application on a specific, or emerging scientific topic.

Databases for species distributions

Authors are encouraged to place all species distribution records in a publicly accessible database such as the national Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) nodes or data centres endorsed by GBIF, including BioFresh

Editorial Procedure

Peer Review

All contributed and invited manuscripts are reviewed by respected scientists who assess the quality, significance and originality of the work, as well as the clarity of its presentation. The review process is rapid and rigorous. Our goal is to limit the time from submission to publication on the World Wide Web to six months. To ensure that Aquatic Sciences presents a broad coverage of the many fields within its scope, manuscripts are initially evaluated by the Editor-in-Chief to determine their suitability for publication in Aquatic Sciences.

When uploading the manuscript in Editorial Manager authors are requested to provide names and contact information (including address, phone and fax number as well as e-mail address) of two experts in the field as possible reviewers of their paper.

Referees’ comments will remain anonymous unless referees explicitly request to be named.

Authors will be notified of manuscript receipt and acceptance or rejection.

Manuscript Submission

Submission of a manuscript implies: that the work described has not been published before; that it is not under consideration for publication anywhere else; that its publication has been approved by all co-authors, if any, as well as by the responsible authorities – tacitly or explicitly – at the institute where the work has been carried out. The publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation.

Permissions

Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) for both the print and online format and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors.

Online Submission

Please follow the hyperlink “Submit manuscript” on the right and upload all of your manuscript files following the instructions given on the screen.

Please ensure you provide all relevant editable source files. Failing to submit these source files might cause unnecessary delays in the review and production process.
