Functional Materials Letters

Manuscript Submission

All submissions to Functional Materials Letters (FML) are handled electronically. Manuscripts must be submitted online via Editorial Manager (EM), a fully web-based submission, peer-review, and tracking system.

New Authors: If you are submitting via this new system for the first time, you will first be required to register. From the account you create, you will be able to monitor your submission and make subsequent submissions.

Article Types

The following article types are considered for publication:

Short Communications/Letters (Page Limit: 4 pages)

Full-Length Research Articles (up to 10 pages)

Invited Review/Feature Articles (no page limit)

Please use the correct template (available for download near the bottom of the webpage) when preparing manuscripts. Review articles are by invitation only.

Editorial Policy

FML adheres to the standards guided by the core practices and policies outlined by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Please refer to the Ethical Policy page for more information.

ORCID

Authors are strongly encouraged to link their ORCID IDs to their personal accounts in the online submission system. Submitting authors will be reminded to provide their ORCID IDs at the time of article submission.

Preprints and Copyright

Please refer to the Author Rights webpage for more information.

The Peer Review Process

As a general rule, the receipt of a manuscript will be acknowledged within one week of submission, and authors will be provided with a manuscript reference number for future correspondence. If such an acknowledgment is not received in a reasonable period of time, the author should contact the Editorial Office.

Submissions are reviewed by the Editorial Office to ensure that it contains all parts. Submissions will be rejected if the author has not prepared the manuscript according to the format requirement for each type of articles.

All manuscripts submitted will be checked for plagiarism (copying text or results from other sources) and self-plagiarism (duplicating substantial parts of authors' own published work without giving the appropriate references) using the CrossCheck database.

Manuscripts are then forwarded to the Editor-in-Chief, who makes an initial assessment. If the manuscript does not appear to be of sufficient merit or is not appropriate for the Journal, then the manuscript will be rejected without review.

Manuscripts that appear meritorious and appropriate for the Journal are then assigned to a member of Editorial Board (handling editor) by the Editor-in-Chief. The FML follows a single-blind peer review process. Authors may submit a list of reviewers who they wish to review or not to review their manuscript. However, the actual peer reviewers invited will remain anonymous and may or may not be the reviewers suggested by the authors as the selection of reviewers is at the sole discretion of handling editors. The editors and reviewers will not disclose any information about a manuscript or its review to anyone except the manuscript's corresponding author. Usually two review reports are required before a decision is made. The Editor-in-Chief reserves the right to make the final decision regarding the acceptance or rejection of manuscripts.

The corresponding author will be notified of whether the submitted article is accepted for publication, rejected, or subject to revision before acceptance. If revisions are required, authors are asked to submit a revised manuscript via the online submission system within 14 to 30 days, depending on the article type and the extent of the revisions required. Please notify the Editorial Office in advance if additional time is needed or if you choose not to submit a revised manuscript.

Open Access and Article Processing Charge

Please refer to the Open Access webpage for more details.

In order to ensure that an author's decision to pay an Article-Processing Charge (APC) to make their article open access does not influence editors' or reviewers' decisions about an article, authors submitting to FML are not asked to confirm whether they would like to publish their article open access until after it has been accepted.

This will reassure the research community and funding agencies that all submitted articles go through the same (rigorous) process of editorial assessment and peer review, ensuring that the high standards the scholarly community has come to expect from World Scientific journals' are maintained.

With the support of the open access APC, World Scientific enables authors to have their final version of their papers published on an open access basis, granting on publication, immediate and unrestricted access to the final published version of the paper. It also allows immediate deposit of the final published version in other repositories without restriction on re-use.

Preparation for Publication

Once a manuscript has been accepted for publication, authors should submit the final version of their manuscript in MS Word format, with all tables/figures as applicable, via the online submission system.

Accepted manuscripts are then copyedited according to the journal's style and the galley proofs in the form of a PDF file are sent by the Publisher to the corresponding author for final approval. Authors are responsible for all statements made in their work, including changes made by the copyeditor.

Proofreading is solely the authors' responsibility. Note that the Editorial Board reserves the right to make revisions to the manuscript and the Publisher may proceed with the publication of your article if no response from the author(s) is received.

All articles are published online first after the authors have approved the galley proofs. The online publication date will be printed on the published article. The article is then scheduled in the next available journal issue. There are 8 print issues in a year: January, February, April, May, July, August, October, November.

A complimentary PDF of the final published version of the article will be sent by email to the Corresponding Author.

Post-Publication Changes to Article

After the accepted manuscript is published online, any requests to add, remove, or rearrange author names or make any changes to the content of the article will be subject to editorial review and result in a corrigendum/erratum.

Data Sharing

FML supports sharing of data generated by your research that supports the article. Authors can share their data in the form of a supplementary file (in PDF or Excel format) that will be published together with the accepted manuscript, or they can share the data by uploading them to an institutional repository or personal website where legally or ethically acceptable.
