Author Guidelines

Several types of papers are accepted including Research Papers, Technical Notes (short, focused research papers), Computer Notes, Review Papers and Issue Papers, which examine in detail a topic of interest to the general readership and may be opinion-based. The journal also regularly publishes guest editorials and technical commentary, history articles, book reviews and a software column.

The journal emphasizes articles that include presentation of theory with practical application; case studies are accepted only if the paper also includes new information of general interest and application.

Please note that page charges are processed by the National Ground Water Association. Information is available from:

Editorial Policies

Data sharing statement to add to policies

Groundwater encourages authors to share the data and other artifacts supporting the results in the paper by archiving it in an appropriate public repository. Authors should include a data accessibility statement, including a link to the repository they have used, in order that this statement can be published alongside their paper. If unpublished software (that not available to public) is cited, it must be made available to readers upon request.

Data citation statement to add to polices:

When citing or making claims based on data, Groundwater authors must refer to the data at the relevant place in the manuscript text and in addition provide a formal citation in the reference list. We recommend the format proposed by the Joint Declaration of Data Citation Principles:

Authors; Year; Dataset title; Data repository or archive; Version (if any); Persistent identifier (e.g. DOI)

Pre-print Policy

Articles “pre-published” as preprints or in similar “early-submission repositories” can be submitted to Groundwater. If the article has been rejected for formal publication elsewhere, Groundwater will only accept a substantially revised version of the pre-published manuscript. Mention of prepublication and manuscript status must be made at time of submission.

If accepted and published in Groundwater, a special footnote will be added which mentions the repository the preprint is housed in as well as the preprint’s DOI number.

Copyright Information

If your paper is accepted, the author identified as the formal corresponding author will receive an email prompting them to log in to Author Services, where via the Wiley Author Licensing Service (WALS) they will be required to complete a copyright license agreement on behalf of all authors of the paper.

For authors signing the copyright transfer agreement

If the Open Access option is not selected the corresponding author will be presented with the copyright transfer agreement (CTA) to sign. The terms and conditions of the CTA can be previewed in the samples associated with the Copyright FAQs.

For authors choosing Open Access

If the Open Access option is selected the corresponding author will have a choice of the following Creative Commons License Open Access Agreements (OAA):

Creative Commons Attribution License (CC-BY) OAA

Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial License (CC-BY-NC) OAA

Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial -NoDerivs License (CC-BY-NC-ND) OAA

General information regarding licensing and copyright is available on the Wiley Author Services and the Wiley Open Access websites.

Note to NIH, The Wellcome Trust and the Research Councils UK Grantees

Pursuant to NIH mandate, Wiley will post the accepted version of contributions authored by NIH grant-holders to PubMed Central upon acceptance. This accepted version will be made publicly available 12 months after publication. Please click here for further information. If you select the Open Access option and your research is funded by The Wellcome Trust or the Research Councils UK (RCUK) you will be given the opportunity to publish your article under a CC-BY license supporting you in complying with The Wellcome Trust and Research Councils UK requirements.

EarlyView

Groundwater is covered by Wiley's EarlyView service. EarlyView articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue. EarlyView articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors’ final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. The nature of EarlyView articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue or page numbers, so EarlyView articles cannot be cited in the traditional way. They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and access the article.

Online production tracking is now available for your article through Wiley’s Author Services.

Author Services enables authors to track their article – once it has been accepted – through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production. The author will receive an e-mail with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete e-mail address is provided when submitting the manuscript. Visit https://authorservices.wiley.com/author-resources/Journal-Authors/index.html for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.

Supporting Information Guidelines are now available at:

Units. Either metric, SI, or U.S. Customary (English) units may be used.  If U.S. Customary units are used, the author is asked to provide the conversion to metric/SI units in parenthesis when units are given in the text of the paper.  It is not necessary to give the conversions in tables and figures.

Artwork. There are three preferred formats for digital artwork submission: Encapsulated PostScript (EPS), Portable Document Format (PDF), and Tagged Image Format (TIFF). We suggest that line art be saved as EPS files. Alternately, these may be saved as PDF files at 600 dots per inch (dpi) or better at final size. Tone art, or photographic images, should be saved as TIFF files with a resolution of 300 dpi at final size. For combination figures, or artwork that contains both photographs and labeling, we recommend saving figures as EPS files, or as PDF files with a resolution of 600 dpi or better at final size. More detailed information on the submission of electronic artwork can be found at https://authorservices.wiley.com/asset/photos/electronic_artwork_guidelines.pdf
