Frequently Asked Questions

A complete list of general journal Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) can be found at: http://www.springer.com/gp/authors-editors/journal-author/frequently-asked-questions/3832

Guidelines specific to GeoInformatica submission can be found at: http://www-users.cs.umn.edu/~shekhar/service/geoinformatica/guidelines2.doc

Time to First Decision: From submission to first decision, the journal aims to provide authors with a quick decision. Reviewers are given a tight deadline to review the manuscript. The timing can fluctuate depending upon several variables: the length of your article, the availability of reviewers if the topic is narrow, and the depth of reviewing necessary if the manuscript is lacking straightforward components, such as suitable references. Clear and concise language and presentation will help editors and reviewers concentrate on the scientific content of your paper and thus smooth the peer review process. NOTE: special issues of the journal are given an option to adapt a different schedule for decisions. Check the Call for Papers for specific schedules.

Time to Publication: Once an article is accepted, the files are immediately provided to the production department for processing. Assuming proofs are returned quickly, the article should be published online (the official version) within 3-5 weeks.

Article DOI: Once your article is proofed, it is immediately published online, which is the publication of record. The assigned Digital Object Identifier (DOI) can be used for citations until the article is assigned to a Volume/Issue/Page Number. NOTE: Once the article is published online, no further changes can be made.

Scope: GeoInformatica is focused on "Advances in Computer Science for GIS" as noted in its title. Thus reviewers expect a survey of Computer Science (CS) literature, e.g. GeoInformatica, Springer lecture notes in Computer Science, ACM/IEEE-CS publications. They expect CS advances for GIS to be general, e.g. applicable to more than one application domain. Papers that are not appropriate for Geoinformatica include: (a) application of a previously-known computer science concept or software to a new GIS problem, (b) computer science advances with tenuous connection to GIS problems, and (c) preliminary results which requires substantial development to be comparable to archival quality journal papers and are better suited for workshops or conferences.

Review: If a cursory browsing of a paper does not find a strong match with the GeoInformatica focus, then it may be a disservice to authors and reviewers to put the paper through a detailed review process which takes an average of six months. Kindly note that this decision does not reflect on the quality of the paper and many other excellent GIS journals may find it within their scope. For example, see table 5 in GIScience Journals Ranking and Evaluation (C. Caron et al), Transactions in GIS, 2008, 12(3): 293-321, Blackwell Pub.

References: GeoInformatica reviewers will have a hard time assessing the CS advances in a paper without adeqaute survey of relevant Computer Science literature, e.g. GeoInformatica, Springer lecture notes in Computer Science, ACM/IEEE-CS publications.

MSWord: The journal does not provide MsWord templates for your manuscript. Please consult each section of the Instructions for Authors to ensure all components of your article have been properly included (references, table, figures, etc). If accepted, your article will be formatted by our production team.

Article Charges: The journal does not charge a submission fee or publication fee. If your article is accepted for publication, it will be published without incurring any cost to the authors. However, authors are offered the option to publish your accepted article as Open Access. You will be provided with the details to this option after acceptance. Selecting the Open Access option will require an Article Processing Fee from either the author or his member institution. Please note color art is free of charge for the online publication.

Special Sections: Special section proposals should include a brief description of special section topic, relevance to GeoInformatica, timeliness of the topic, a list of recent meeting (e.g., workshops, conferences) and publications on the topic, a list of potential contributors (e.g., authors, reviewers, co-organizers), and a plan to publicize call for papers. It should also include a schedule for a call for papers, manuscript due date, review completion dates, a process to select up to 4 best papers, revised manuscript due date, camera ready paper due date, guest editorial due date, etc. The proposal should list relevant leadership experience of organizers. Authors of articles of special issues can be invited as reviewers for other manuscripts suggested in a special issue, but the majority of the reviewer must be recognized specialists in the fields other than authors of proposed manuscripts for the special issues. Special sections are typically smaller than ordinary issues and contain about 4 full-length (5000 to 8000 words) articles.

Manuscript Submission

Submission of a manuscript implies: that the work described has not been published before; that it is not under consideration for publication anywhere else; that its publication has been approved by all co-authors, if any, as well as by the responsible authorities – tacitly or explicitly – at the institute where the work has been carried out. The publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation.

Permissions

Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) for both the print and online format and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors.

Online Submission

Authors should submit their manuscripts online. Electronic submission substantially reduces the editorial processing and reviewing times and shortens overall publication times. Please follow the hyperlink “Submit online” on the right and upload all of your manuscript files following the instructions given on the screen.

Title Page
