Author Guidelines

……

Scope

Movement Disorders publishes Editorials (by invitation only), Reviews, Viewpoints (Opinion and Hypotheses driven) Research Articles, Brief Reports and Letters. All articles in Movement Disorders, including letters, can be accompanied by a video when appropriate.

Optional Table of Contents Graphics: Movement Disorders offers authors the option of highlighting their paper with a Table of Contents graphic.  These graphics are published in the online issue of the journal.  Images for the graphical Table of Contents should capture the idea of a paper, displaying a figure or graph that is central to the manuscript. Images for the Table of Contents are reproduced in color at no charge, so authors are encouraged to submit color figures.  The image must be square with dimensions of 2 inches/5 cm and should be at least 300 dpi.  The use of graphs and images consisting of several parts is strongly discouraged. Please submit a 50-word abstract summarizing the key findings presented in the paper to accompany the graphic.

The following are the requirements for each submission type:

Editorials: Invited Editorials are typically 1500-2000 words with 10-15 references and can include one figure or table. Editorial are solicited by the Editor-in-Chief.

Research Articles: Full-length articles should present new clinical or scientific data in a field related to movement disorders. The format should include: Structured Abstract: (Background, Objectives, Methods, Results, Conclusions) Up to 250 words with no abbreviations. Text: Up to 3700 words excluding of abstract, legends and references. Minimal abbreviations. Tables and/or figures: Up to 5. Legends: Should be concise and describe results without repeating data in text. The word count must appear on the title page. Videos: See Video section above for the video guidelines.

Reviews: Clinical and basic science Reviews are generally published upon request or after agreement with the Editor-in-Chief. Unsolicited Reviews will also be considered for publication; however, authors are strongly encouraged to contact the Editor-in-Chief in advance of submission. Reviews can be up to 5000 words, excluding the unstructured abstract, legends, and references, and should include no more than 6 authors. The word count must appear on the title page.

Scientific Perspectives: The purpose of these articles is to discuss recent important scientific results and methodologies and to place them into a clinical and translational context. Length should be no more than 5000 words, and figures and tables can be included. These will have priority in review and production, with a goal of quick publication. Scientific Perspectives are generally published upon request or after agreement with the editors. Proposals for topics and other inquiries may be directed to the Editor in Chief or Scientific Perspectives Editor Dimitri Krainc at krainc@northwestern.edu.

Gaps & Controversies: The purpose of these articles is to discuss relevant knowledge gaps and/or controversies in the field of movement disorders. Length should be no more than 3500 words, excluding abstract (unstructured, max 250 words) and references (max 40) and containing the following sections: 1) INTRODUCTION (clarify the nature of the gap or controversy under discussion ); 2) WHAT WE KNOW (provide context and a concise summary of available data); 3) GAPS & CONTROVERSIES (highlight data with ostensibly conflicting results and methodological weaknesses and identify areas that have not yet been targeted); 4) CONCLUSIONS (provide an authoritative sense of where we are despite the uncertainty, proposing areas to address in future research). Authorship should be limited to a maximum of 6. G&C papers are generally published after agreement with the editors. Proposals for topics may be addressed to the G&C editors and directed to Julie Nash at mdjedoffice@gmail.com.

Hot Topics: Hot Topics articles should be eye-catching, important articles in clinical or basic science topics relevant to movement disorders, published recently or as DOI. It is preferable for the selected articles to be in journals not likely to be read by the Movement Disorder readership. Examples of good source journals would be Science, the “Nature” series or Neuron. A major clinical breakthrough or notable trials relevant to our field (e.g. from the Lancet, Lancet Neurology, NEJM or similar) would also be good for this section. Authors: There should be no more than two authors. Text: Up to 400 words with no more than 5 references, including the main reference of the paper reviewed. A catchy title for the article would be useful, followed by the full citation of the original article and then the summary of the paper. Please state in a sentence or two what makes this article newsworthy or groundbreaking to put the paper into context for a reader not familiar with the field. Here is an example of a properly formatted Hot Topic: Targeting glucocerebrosidase: Reduced enzymatic activity and Parkinson's disease. Please send all Hot Topics proposals to the Movement Disorders Editorial Office at mdjedoffice@gmail.com before submitting to avoid preparing a Hot Topic on a paper that is already under consideration.

Viewpoints: These are opinion articles related to any aspect of movement disorders. Viewpoints can be submitted without solicitation. Viewpoint can be up to 2000 words and 40 references. The word count must appear on the title page. Viewpoints do not need any abstract.

Brief Reports: Brief reports are short original clinical or basic science reports related to any aspect of movement disorders. Important but negative results are best considered as Brief Reports. Structured Abstracts up to 150 words, text up to 1700 words, tables and figures up to 2. References should be limited to 40. The word count must appear on the title page.

Letters to the Editors: All Letters should have no abstract. Movement Disorders does not accept Case Reports, but cases can be submitted as a Letter: New Observation. Authors considering submission of a single case as a Brief Report or Research Article might contact the Editor in advance. Movement Disorders permits publication of two types of letters :

Letters: New Observations -- This section is appropriate for preliminary scientific observations and case presentations that raise a novel clinical or scientific issue. Letters on new observations may be up to 500 words and contain no more than 1 table/figure and 7 references.

Letter: Published Articles -- These may be submitted within eight weeks after the paper was published in print. Text length for both letters and replies may be up to 500 words and contain 1 table/figure and up to 5 references. Letters from original authors must be submitted within four weeks after request for response.

Articles reporting Clinical Trials

Clinical Trial Reports must be written in accordance with the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) statement (Moher D et al., JAMA 2001; 285:1987–1991; see also Moher D et al., Lancet 2001;357:1191–1194). Authors should ensure that information on all of the critical design features listed in the CONSORT checklist is reported in the manuscript. A CONSORT flow diagram should be included with the manuscript, clearly outlining the flow of patients through the trial. In addition, a statement is required in the cover letter specifically confirming that there has been no ghost writing by anyone not named on the author list (see Editorial in Movement Disorders 2005;20:1536). The precise financial relationship between a clinical trial sponsor and the authors must be delineated in the manuscript.

Form of Manuscripts

Pages should be numbered in succession, the title page being number one.

The text of the manuscript should be in the following sequence:
