南洋理工大学招收化学和生物医学工程博士
About the Project
Non-invasive imaging of neuronal electrical activity, whether in vivo or in vitro, has been a longstanding challenge for neurodegenerative disease diagnosis, understanding the cognitive function at the cellular level, and building the next-generation brain-machine interface. Leveraging high-precision interferometric imaging techniques, our group has recently revealed the electromechanical coupling phenomena in primary cortical neurons in vitro and photoreceptors in vivo, where the neurons undergo accompanying morphological deformations at the nanometer scale. This project aims to continue exploring the underlying mechanisms of such electromechanical coupling and exploiting these phenomena for the all-optical neural interface. The successful candidate will work with our collaborative, multidisciplinary team to develop novel functional neuroimaging techniques in a cutting-edge research project funded by the National Research Foundation (NRF), an unparalleled opportunity to engage in high-impact research and enjoy rapid personal development in a meritocratic culture.
Qualification aim: Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical and Biomedical Engineering
About the group
We are a collaborative team consisting of members with solid backgrounds in optics, biomedical engineering, signal processing, biology, and chemistry, led by Nanyang Assistant Professor Tong Ling (NRF Fellow) (https://www.tonglinglab.com). Our labs are hosted under the School of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. We also have strong collaborations with the Singapore Eye Research Institute through the SERI-NTU Advanced Ocular Engineering (STANCE) Laboratory, Stanford University, and the University of Washington.
Scholarship
The successful candidate will be funded through the NTU Research Scholarship for the Fall 2024 Intake.
Eligibility
Applicants need to have a minimum of Honours (Distinction) or its equivalent (CGPA > 3.2 on a 4.0 scale). A valid GRE score is required for applicants who are not graduates of the Autonomous Universities in Singapore. For applicants whose native language is not English, a good TOEFL/IELTS score is required as well.
How to apply
The application deadline for this position is 31 January 2024. Please indicate your interest early to tong.ling@ntu.edu.sg, as obtaining the advisor’s support is crucial for your application. We encourage students with a strong background in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, engineering science, physics, or other related majors to apply.
