Aims and scope
Announcement: From January 2022 Basic and Applied Ecology will become an open access journal. Authors who publish in Basic and Applied Ecology will be able to make their work immediately, permanently, and freely accessible.
Basic and Applied Ecology continues with the same aims and scope, editorial team, submission system and rigorous peer review.
Basic and Applied Ecology authors will pay an article publishing charge (APC), have a choice of license options, and retain copyright to their published work. The APC will be requested after peer review and acceptance. The APC payment will be required for all accepted articles submitted after 1st October 2021 The APC for Basic and Applied Ecology can be found on the open access page.
Please note: Authors who have submitted their paper on or before the 30th September 2021, will have their accepted article published in Basic and Applied Ecology at no charge. Authors submitting their paper after this date will be requested to pay the APC. For more details visit our FAQs page.
Basic and Applied Ecology provides a forum in which ecological advances and ideas can be rapidly communicated to a wide audience. Basic and Applied Ecology publishes Reviews, Perspectives and Original Contributions from all areas of ecology, complemented by Invited Views, Comments and Special Issues. Ecologists from all countries are invited to publish ecological research of general ecological and international interest on its pages, as there is no bias with regard to taxon or geographical area.
Papers in Basic and Applied Ecology include topical research in areas such as biodiversity and associated functions and services, response to global change across latitudes as well as multitrophic interactions. New project designs and methods are also welcome. The main research areas covered by Basic and Applied Ecology are Conservation Ecology, Applied Ecology, Community and Population Ecology, Landscape and Ecosystem Ecology, and Functional Ecology, but contributions from other fields will also be considered. Basic and Applied Ecology actively solicits papers that strive to integrate the various disciplines and issues within the broad field of ecology.
Basic and Applied Ecology published its first volumes in 2000 and is the official journal of the "Gesellschaft fur Okologie", the Ecological Society of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. For members of the "Gesellschaft fur Okologie" free access to the online version of Basic and Applied Ecology (BAAE) is included in their membership fee (75 Euro per year). Basic and Applied Ecology (BAAE) seeks reviews, perspectives and original contributions from all areas of basic and applied ecology. Ecologists from all countries are invited to publish ecological research of international interest on its pages. There is no bias with regard to taxon or geographical area. Basic and Applied Ecology is the official journal of the “Gesellschaft für Ökologie”, the Ecological Society of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The acceptance of a paper implies that it has been reviewed and recommended by at least two reviewers of which at least one is from the Editors or the Editorial Board.
Article types
Research papers
Research papers report the results of original research. The material must not have been previously published elsewhere. Full length articles are up to 6,000 words.
Review articles
Reviews summarize the status of research in a field of current interest. Review articles are up to 10,000 words and must include a methods section explaining how the literature for review was selected.
Opinion papers (Perspectives and Invited Views)
Opinion papers provide a novel, distinctive viewpoint on any subject within the journal's scope. The articles should be well grounded in evidence and adequately supported by citations, but may focus on a stimulating and thought-provoking line of arguments. Opinion papers should not exceed 6,000 words.
Letters to the Editor
Letters to the Editor (Correspondence) papers are responses to recently published papers and include only few key references . For this article type no abstract is required. Maximum length is fixed to 2,000 words and two figures or tables are allowed. The content must be constructive and respectful in tone. It will generally receive a response from the authors of the original article, and both letter and response will be published in the same issue.
Book Reviews
Book reviews will be included in the journal on a range of relevant and recent titles. These are usually less than 2,000 words. Please submit your requests/ideas to the Book Review Editor Carsten F. Dormann at (carsten.dormann@biom.uni-freiburg.de)
Basic and Applied Ecology now also accepts "Letters to the Editor". The title of this new article type should be "own text - followed by the text it refers to: authors (year)". For this article type no abstract is required. Maximum length is fixed to 2000 words or 4 printed pages. Two figures or tables are allowed. If more table or figures are necessary they should appear in the electronic supplement only.

• Manuscript has been 'spell checked' and 'grammar checked'
• All references mentioned in the Reference List are cited in the text, and vice versa
• Permission has been obtained for use of copyrighted material from other sources (including the Internet)
• Relevant declarations of interest have been made
• Journal policies detailed in this guide have been reviewed
• Referee suggestions and contact details provided, based on journal requirements
