五个有效引导学生阅读复杂文本的技巧

As a teacher, I understand that reading and comprehending complex texts can be challenging for students. However, it is an essential skill that they need to develop to succeed academically and beyond. In this lecture, I will be sharing five tips for effectively engaging students in reading complex texts.

The first tip is to teach academic vocabulary. As students progress through the grades, the text they are asked to read and comprehend becomes more dense and complex. It is important to identify the specific terms used in the text and provide explicit instruction on what those terms mean. By teaching academic vocabulary, we can help students have a greater understanding of complex texts.

The second tip is to assess students' prior knowledge. Prior knowledge or lack thereof can be a help or hindrance in comprehending complex text. If students are missing important pieces of prior knowledge, they may not be able to understand the text very well. It is crucial to figure out what students don't know that is important for them to know and address those gaps before they start reading a text. By doing so, students will have better access to the complex text.

The third tip is to engage in thinking aloud while reading a portion of difficult text. Take a piece of really challenging text in your discipline and do a think aloud on it. Walk through it, start reading it out loud, and talk about the things that you are struggling with. When you come across a specific term that you don't know the meaning of, stop and go find out the meaning, and come back. By making visible for students the cognitive processes that you are engaging in, you can help them understand what is normal and what kinds of things they can expect when reading complex text.

The fourth tip is to teach students how to use text structures and text features. Text structure is learning how a text is organized, and text features are things like headings, tables of contents, graphs, charts, pictures, and captions. By understanding how texts are organized, where main ideas are presented, and how facts are presented, students can find information more quickly and know what to pay attention to. By highlighting the importance of text features, we can help students understand how they can use them to understand the text.

The fifth and final tip is to allow students to work together on complex text. Students do not have to read and understand everything by themselves. It is perfectly fine to have students read a text, preview a text, or skim a text and then get together in groups to talk about it. By bringing their questions and the things they didn't understand to the group, students can bounce ideas and questions off each other. This act of talking through text and hearing what other people think about it can increase each student's own interpretation of the text.

In conclusion, reading and comprehending complex texts can be a daunting task for students, but it is a crucial skill they need to develop to succeed academically and beyond. By implementing these five tips, we can effectively engage students in reading complex texts and help them develop the necessary skills to be successful in their academic careers.
