Text structure is learning how a text is organized, and text features are things like headings, tables of contents, graphs, charts, pictures, and captions. By understanding how texts are organized, where main ideas are presented, and how facts are presented, students can find information more quickly and know what to pay attention to. By highlighting the importance of text features, we can help students understand how they can use them to understand the text.
The fifth and final tip is to allow students to work together on complex text. Students do not have to read and understand everything by themselves. It is perfectly fine to have students read a text, preview a text, or skim a text and then get together in groups to talk about it. By bringing their questions and the things they didn't understand to the group, students can bounce ideas and questions off each other.
