Hello. Im Vicky, the only English teacher of Yucun Primary School in Nishan town. This is the sixth year I have taught here. And now Id like to share some stories happened to me. Whats more, my thoughts about several important questions that have huge impacts on me.

Question 1: How to be a good teacher?

This is an open-ended question. And one that has to be considered very carefully. I mean the answer may vary a lot in different periods for me. During my first two years of teaching, most of the students even all of them can get good grades may be my answer. Yes, its difficult but I did do it. There is no god. Then came the third and fourth years. My answer to the question sounds like more reasonable. The students can get good grades and I can make this real in a more efficient, easier and happier way. As you might expected, my students still did quite well on tests. And the classroom resounded with laughter. But until just recently, my answer changed again. Because I realized the value and importance of human connection, in other words, relationships. James Comer says that no significant learning can occur without a significant relationship. George Washington Carver says all learning is understanding relationships. I believe everyone has ever been affected by a teacher. You know students dont learn from teachers they dont like. So I tried to do some things that are easier said than done, like seeking first to understand as opposed to being understood. I said to my students, You are the best students and I am the best teacher, we are all put together, so we can show everybody else around us how to do it. You were somebody when you came, youll be a better somebody when you leave.I say it long enough, and it starts to be a part of my students. The power of connection between me and my students really works.

Question 2: How to be a better English teacher?

I definitely think Im gonna be a good teacher after answering the first question. Then the second question pops up rapidly. Tell you the truth, I was not so good at English during my student days. I worked hard, but I did it in wrong ways and without correct methods. Needless to say, my oral English was too ordinary. Having authentic and polished oral English is every learners dream, myself included. At the end of 2020, our city was under a COVID-19 lockdown, I felt so anxious. I needed to do something to calm down. I tried to read prose and poetry. Miraculously, the more I read, the more peaceful I became. In the following days, I eagerly searched for the skills about how to read like a native speaker. Linking words, contractions, word stress, sentence stress...Using these skills, I started to read one sentence a day, short or long, just to improve my spoken English. I keep practicing and Im improving all the time. Being a life-long learner is what I want to, what I work for, what I try to teach my students... This is my answer!

Question 3: What kind of teacher do you want to be?

It is a teachers burden always to hope that with learning, a boys or girls character might be changed. And, so is the destiny of a man or woman. The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires. No written word, no spoken plea can teach our students what they should be, nor all the books on all the shelves. It's what the teachers are ourselves. I truly believe we teachers are born to make a difference.

Thanks for your listening and Im looking forward to exchanging the ideas with you.
