英文文献中，我们常会看到e.g.和i.e.。他们都是拉丁文的缩写。E.g. 代表的是exempli gratia，取首字母后面用省略点代替就成了e.g.，意思是：例如。I.e.是id est的缩写，取首字母后面用点代替，就成了i.e.，意思是：即（换句话说）。
E.g. 与 i.e.都有特殊的功能，下文我们将举例说明二者的区别。
关于E.g.，前面有提到是“举例”的意思，那么如果我们有很多个例子而且不是完整的句子呢？
1. Should that happen to poor, as-yet unaffected places (e.g., most of South Asia and Africa)the suffering can be great.
2. There’s a common view that Malcolm Turnbull’s ‘30-minute city’ is yet another slight variation on the many terms we already have for a more sustainable urban form, e.g. compact city, walkable city, smart growth, new urbanism, urban consolidation.
以上可以看到，e.g. 在文中没有放在特别显眼的位置，就像是一个符号提供具体的例子来解释文字的意思。
那么，i.e. 怎么使用呢？很多人混淆了i.e. 跟e.g.，可是i.e. 丝毫没有举例的意思。i.e.表示解释的意思，类似中文的“即”或“换句话说”：
Besides math and crossword puzzles, I am passionate about self-supported bicycle touring, i.e., traveling hundreds and thousands of miles on a bike with all my camping gear and other supplies.
可以看到，i.e. 后面的内容并不是前面内容的一部分或一个具体事例，而是对前面内容的完整解说。
这里e.g.和i.e.的区别就很明显了，e.g. 是不完全举例（只是列举了几个可能性），而i.e. 是完全的！比较下面两个例子：
1. Afterwork, I’ll walk over to that new sports arena, i.e., Thunderdome.
2. Afterwork, I’ll walk over to a sports arena, e.g., Thunderdome or Victory Court.
在第一个句子中，i.e. 是对前面的完全举例，特指那一个体育馆Thunderdome。在第二个句子中，e.g. 则是不完全举例，有可能是Thunderdome也有可能是Victory Court还可能是其他。注意，i.e. 和 e.g. 第二个点后面都常跟一个逗号。
