在初次提交论文稿件的时候，需要随论文一并发送给期刊编辑的一封信，这封信就是投稿信。投稿信（Cover letter）是众所周知的敲门砖信件。没有任何介绍就直接投稿，就像一个打电话的人不打招呼或不表明身份在开始谈话一样。
那么什么是好的投稿信呢？首先遣词造句要有礼貌，其次信息要言简意赅。Cover letter应该包括作者们的名字、工作单位和联系地址，表明那位作者是通讯作者。Cover letter应该说明论文的标题、主要的内容概括（创新点）和推荐审稿人等。Cover letter应该简单、直接以及有承诺。所谓的有承诺就是Cover letter中要有表明论文作者们对该期刊仰慕已久，一致强烈要求投稿该期刊，一致同意署名无异议，绝对没有一稿多投及剽窃行为等等的文字。
