Project description

A doctoral position in Sweden consists of research training within a research project and through a set of courses with ambitions to achieve the necessary competence related to the research, but also other skills that are useful in the future. This specific position is focused on research training based on field experiments to investigate the atmospheric chemistry of short-lived climate pollutants in the Indo Gangetic Plain (IGP) region, including field experiments in India, Nepal and Bhutan.

The candidate will work on applications with the latest instruments, including an Aerodynamic Aerosol Classifier (AAC), oxidation flow tube (GO:PAM), photoacoustic spectrometer (PAS) and with high-resolution chemical ionization ToF-MS (HR-CI-ToF-MS) with a specially designed inlet to identify and quantify organic molecules in both the gas and particle phases. Other instruments for air quality and aerosol studies will also be used.The project includes challenges to understand the formation, properties and occurrence of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Linked to this is the identification of light-absorbing properties either of directly-emitted compounds, ie brown carbon (BrC) or of compounds formed in the atmosphere by oxidation of compounds from both biogenic and anthropogenic sources. Therefore, the PhD student will be deeply involved in field missions and evaluation of data collected from campaigns in India, Nepal and Bhutan.

Selection criteria

Experience of experimental research in relevant work area. Specifically published works in the field are meritorious.

Experience of working in international environments in developing countries. Specifically, experience from India, Nepal or Bhutan is meritorious.

Experience in handling and evaluating data from advanced instruments for atmospheric science studies. Specifically meritorious is experience with the instruments that will be mainly used in the research: Aerodynamic Aerosol Classifier (AAC), oxidation flow tube (GO:PAM), photoacoustic spectrometer (PAS) and high-resolution chemical ionization ToF-MS (HR-CI-ToF-MS).
