Microstructure plays an importance role in the mechanical performance of materials.
To underpin the fundamentals of mechanics of materials and relations with the microstructure, micro– and meso– scale mechanical testing approaches will be developed to investigate mechanics of individual and small batches of microstructural features, respectively.
Micro– and meso– scale specimens will be designed and prepared using micro–machining techniques.
These small–scale testing pieces will be assembled in bespoke mechanical testing rigs that were recently developed in the group. Miniaturised mechanical tests will be performed under optical and SEM microscopes to investigate the deformation and failure process of materials with respect to individual and small batches of microstructural features.
The global and local strains will be measured using digital image correlation (DIC) and AFM.
Pre–testing, intermittent and post–mortem analysis is to be conducted using advanced characterisation techniques including SEM, EBSD, EDX and FIB.
To simulate and interpret the experimental results, finite element modelling will be used.
