We are inviting applications for an immediate postdoctoral researcher opening in the atmospheric chemistry group ( www.esf.edu/faculty/chai/index.php ) at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF).

Title:

Postdoctoral Research Scientist position at SUNY ESF

Start time: Fall 2023 or Spring 2024

Joint collaborative project:

Dr. Jiajue Chai (jichai@esf.edu)

Research area:

Atmospheric chemistry instrumentation development

Research topic:

The candidate will be involved in exciting new instrumentation development for reactive nitrogen species and potential field deployment funded by the National Science Foundation, with opportunities to collaborate with top atmospheric chemists from other institutions.

Requirement:

The successful candidate will be expected to work independently and collaboratively in a group environment with the following qualifications:

1)A Ph.D. degree in chemistry, physics, atmospheric science, geoscience, environmental science, environmental engineering, or any related disciplines

2)In-depth understanding of atmospheric reaction mechanism and atmospheric measurement techniques

3)Extensive experience with atmospheric chemistry instrumentation (optical spectroscopy and/or mass spectroscopy) in both lab and field

4)Strong English communication (e.g., publication and presentation)

Additionally, candidates with 1) knowledge of stable isotopes theories and experiments, and 2) computer programming skills, will be preferably considered.

To apply, please submit the following materials to Dr. Jiajue Chai (jichai@esf.edu)

1)Curriculum Vitae

2)A cover letter describing past and current research experience, why you are interested in the proposed position, as well as future research plan

3)Three names of reference who may be contacted for recommendation letters if we move forward

We provide competitive salary and it is commensurate with experience.

Review of applications will be started from Sep 20, 2023, and the position will keep open until filled. The initial appointment will be for one year with possible renewal for the second and third year.

Inquiries about this position should be made to Dr. Jiajue Chai (Email: jichai@esf.edu; Phone: 315-470-6830)

Bio: Dr. Jiajue Chai is an atmospheric chemist, with special interests in tracking sources, atmospheric processes and sinks of reactive nitrogen species, and quantitatively understanding their implications for air quality, climate, and human and ecosystem health. To address these questions, his research brings together a novel set of skills including instrumentation, analytical methods, theory and modeling to investigate atmospheric chemistry in both the laboratory and field. His recent work involves characterization of nitrous acid (HONO), nitrogen oxides (NOx=NO+NO2), nitric acid (HNO3) and particulate nitrate in their sources, sinks and atmospheric chemistry in many ways, to constrain their atmospheric budgets and the atmospheric oxidative capacity. Ultimately, the research findings will help predict and mitigate the air quality and climate change. Over the years, Dr. Chai has built extensive collaborations with scientists across the US including those from NASA, NOAA and USDA, as well as numerous institutions. Jiajue's current research work is supported by 4 ongoing NSF grants.

About SUNY ESF: ESF is one of nine Ph.D. granting institutions within the SUNY system, and consistently earns high rankings in US News and World Report, Forbes, Princeton Review, and other national college guidebooks. SUNY ESF is dedicated to solving environmental problems through research, teaching and service. With a total enrollment of 1,700 undergraduates and 600 graduate students, SUNY ESF provides an intimate small-college atmosphere with a low student/faculty ratio that allows for personal attention and assistance for students. Access to chemical instrumentation (http://www.esf.edu/ats/) on the campus is excellent. The ESF campus is adjacent to Syracuse University and close to SUNY Upstate Medical University. The Syracuse Veterans Administration Hospital, Upstate Medical University Hospital, Crouse Hospital and Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital are within walking distance from ESF and offer extensive research and collaborative opportunities for health-related projects. The University Hill community provides students and faculty with the resources of large institutions of higher education, including a wide array of courses, computer and library facilities, and sports and health services.

About Syracuse: Located on the eastern edge of the Finger Lakes region, Syracuse is a small city in a rural region offering a diversity of natural and cultural amenities, a low cost of living, and a high quality of life, ranking among the top 10 percent of "Best Places to Live" in "The Places Rated Almanac." Syracuse is situated with easy access to New York City, Boston, the Adirondack Park, the Great Lakes, and many other points of interest in the eastern United States and Canada.
