Fan tourism generated by the transmedia franchise The Lost Tomb (Daomu biji) has raised interesting questions about fictionality. To address these questions, this lecture will revisit philosopher Kendall Waltons theory of fictionality, track recent discussions in narratology, and propose a radically expanded understanding of fictionality as a game of imagination that pushes the boundaries of reality by deploying our cognitive, affective, and practical capacities and working with social, economic, and political institutions. Analysis of the original novel, its adaptation into other media formats, and the evolvement of fan tourism  parallels exploration into the intersections of space studies and narratology, tourism studies and fan studies. Luc Boltanskis distinction between (the uncertain) worldand (the already determined) realitywill be invoked to invite further reflection on the fate of fictionality under contemporary capitalism.
