JOURNAL OF THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF NEW ZEALAND

Instructions for Authors

Please consult the Journal’s style guide on preparing and submitting a manuscript to Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand. These instructions should be read in conjunction with the Royal Society Te Aparangi’s Policy and procedures document, which includes guidelines on the responsibilities and requirements placed on authors. This journal is peer-reviewed, and all peer review is single blind.

Prospective contributors should consult recent issues of the journal to ensure that a planned submission is appropriate.

Open Access

You have the option to publish open access in this journal via our Open Select publishing program. Publishing open access means that your article will be free to access online immediately on publication, increasing the visibility, readership and impact of your research. Articles published Open Select with Taylor & Francis typically receive 95% more citations* and over 7 times as many downloads** compared to those that are not published Open Select.

Your research funder or your institution may require you to publish your article open access. Visit our Author Services website to find out more about open access policies and how you can comply with these.

You will be asked to pay an article publishing charge (APC) to make your article open access and this cost can often be covered by your institution or funder. Use our APC finder to view the APC for this journal.

Please visit our Author Services website if you would like more information about our Open Select Program.

**Usage in 2018-2020 for articles published in 2016-2020.

Viewpoints are short manuscripts limited to 2,000 words (including references) that, discuss emergent ideas, controversial concepts, or policy issues for a diverse professional audience. Viewpoints should outline an opinion on one issue, based on rigorous scientific research and may include a limited quantity of new scientific data. They should not be wholly political or summary. Unlike other contributions, Viewpoints should begin with a 2-3 sentence statement outlining your opinion. Subsequent text can be split into different sections to be written as evidence. Prior to submission, Viewpoints should be discussed either with the Editor in Chief or the lead Guest Editor of a Special Issue. Viewpoints will undergo the normal peer-review process.

Letters to the Editor are short, post-publication commentary on articles published (online) by the Journal within the last three months. These manuscripts should not exceed 500 words in length, do not include an abstract or keywords, and must include the previously published article as a citation. Letters may be peer reviewed and are published at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief as a Letter alongside a Reply (also restricted to 500 words) by the original authors. The Journal will not consider multiple letters or replies on the same topic. Letters should outline either challenges or clarifications of the published work and be based on knowledge contemporaneous to the original paper, and not on subsequent developments. Before submitting a Letter, the Journal strongly encourages correspondents to contact the authors of the paper, as this may resolve matters deriving from a simple misunderstanding.

Purely taxonomic papers (like species descriptions without a broader systematic or evolutionary context) are not considered for publication.

Empirical papers in social science must have a clear, repeatable process of data collection. The Journal is unlikely to accept very descriptive qualitative papers with long data quotes but little analysis, or papers with limited, convenience samples where a more systematic and extensive sample is preferable.

Templates

Papers should be submitted in Word or LaTeX formats. Figures should be saved separately from the text. To assist you in preparing your paper, we provide formatting template(s) to use after saving to your hard drive.
