Instructions for Authors

Please consult the Journal’s  style guide before submitting a manuscript to the New Zealand Journal of Botany. These instructions should be read in conjunction with the Royal Society Te Aparangi's  Policy and Procedures document. This journal is peer-reviewed, and all peer review is single blind.

Prospective contributors should consult  recent issues of the journal to ensure that a planned submission is appropriate.

Authors wishing to submit work of a taxonomic nature should carefully follow the style requirements specified in the Journal’s special instructions for taxonomic papers when preparing the manuscript. The journal adheres to the requirements of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN) (Shenzhen Code) with respect to electronic publication of taxonomic works.

New and first-time authors are advised to consult the Editor's Guidance for Young Authors.

Open Access

You have the option to publish open access in this journal via our Open Select publishing program. Publishing open access means that your article will be free to access online immediately on publication, increasing the visibility, readership and impact of your research. Articles published Open Select with Taylor & Francis typically receive 95% more citations* and over 7 times as many downloads** compared to those that are not published Open Select.

Article types

Research articles of up to 7,500 words are welcome. Authors wishing to submit longer papers should first of all contact the senior editor.

Short communications are a vehicle for publishing small but interesting pieces of work, and should be 1,500–3,000 words in length. They should follow the same structure as full-length papers.

Review papers may be of any length, but potential authors should approach the senior editor before submission to assess the suitability of their proposed topic and approach.

Perspectives may present timely syntheses, advance cogent new hypotheses without a requirement for direct testing, or express well-argued dissent from prevailing views. Perspectives will undergo the normal peer-review process.

Forum articles are invited discussions on a specific topic, moderated by an editor.

Letters discuss papers recently published in New Zealand Journal of Botany, and may be up to 2500 words in length. The author of the paper in question is usually given an opportunity to reply.

Book reviews are by invitation only. There are no formal limits on length but the editors reserve the right to edit for length and style.

Papers should be submitted in Word format. Figures should be saved separately from the text. To assist you in preparing your paper, we provide formatting template(s).

References

Journal names in the reference list can either be listed in full or abbreviated, so long as it is consistent throughout the list. The complete reference style formatting can be found in this reference guide.

An EndNote output style is also available to assist you.

 Checklist: What to Include

Author details. Please ensure all listed authors meet the Taylor & Francis authorship criteria. All authors of a manuscript should include their full name and affiliation on the cover page of the manuscript. Where available, please also include ORCiDs. One author will need to be identified as the corresponding author, with their email address normally displayed in the article PDF and the online article. Authors’ affiliations are the affiliations where the research was conducted. If any of the named co-authors moves affiliation during the peer-review process, the new affiliation can be given as a footnote. Please note that no changes to affiliation can be made after your paper is accepted. Read more on authorship.

Presentation of papers. Research articles and Short communications are to be organized in the following sections: Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References. If your article includes any supplementary material, this should be uploaded with your initial submission for peer review purposes.

An abstract of up to 300 words must accompany all papers. It should be able to stand alone and not contain any undefined abbreviations, equations or citations. It should summarise the scientific context of the study, the aims or questions, the essentials of the approach or methods used, the main results and conclusions. The abstract should name any new techniques, new concepts, and new taxonomic entities. If there is a direct application of the study's findings, it should be mentioned. Authors may also include an abstract and keywords in Te Reo Maori, or in another language if they consider it important for the dissemination of findings. The Royal Society Te Aparangi reserves the right to charge a nominal fee for additional services that may be required to review and copy-edit abstracts in languages other than English and Maori.
