Please ensure that your article fits within the journal’s Aims and Scope and that you have read our Editorial Policies before submitting your article.

Quick Checklist for Initial Submission

To simplify the process for authors we differentiate between initial and revised submissions. Initial submissions can be submitted in any file type and only need to adhere to the following requirements:

Single column and double line spaced

Continuous line and page numbering throughout

Title

Author details including full list of author names and addresses and the name, address and e-mail address of the corresponding author

Abstract no more than 350 words and listing the main results and conclusions, using simple, factual, numbered statements. The final point should be headed ‘Synthesis’, and should sum up the paper’s key message in generic terms that can be understood by non-specialists, indicating clearly how this study has advanced ecological understanding. (Translated abstracts in any language can be published alongside our accepted articles)

Main manuscript sections for research articles these should be Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, (Conclusions optional). Sections for all other article types are listed under "Article Types", below

Figures and Tables can be embedded within the text where referenced to facilitate reviewing

Author Contributions which should mention all authors individually and their specific contibutions to the research. This is not necessary for single author author submissions.

Data Availability Statement saying where you intend to archive your data

References these do not need to be formatted in a spcific style, but we prefer that in-text citations are provided as: (Author, Year)

If you are asked to submit a revision then you must comply with the full manuscript specifications here.

**TRANSPARENT PEER REVIEW**

The Journal of Ecology is participating in a pilot on Transparent Peer Review. By submitting to this journal, authors are automatically opted into the pilot. If an article is accepted the reviewer reports, authors’ responses, and the editor's decision letter (including Associate Editor comments) will all be published on Publons and the published article will include a direct link to these review details. Authors have the opportunity to opt out during the submission process, and reviewers can decide whether or not they want their name to appear alongside their report when it is published.

Article types

Research article:  report practical or theoretical ecological research. Typically 8000 words in length. Longer articles are also considered, provided the content justifies the extent. These should be structured with the following subheadings: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, (Conclusions optional) References. Full guidelines and specifications for each section are available here, however, you do not need to format your article according to these at initial submission.

Review: intend to promote discussion of a topical area rather than offer an exhaustive survey of the literature. Articles that propose new ideas, offer provocative new directions for a discipline within plant ecology, or challenge currently accepted views are encouraged. Article length should be up to 8000 words and 5 figures as a guideline, should give integrative perspectives on a previous research in the area. Authors are encouraged to structure text around a central conceptual figure or illustration. (We also offer the Mini-Review article type for shorter pieces focussed on recent developments, see below). Note those manuscripts that report substantial empirical data in the context of a novel idea are likely to be better suited to a Research Article. Abstracts for all essay reviews should be no more than 200 words, and sections should be titled according to the content of the manuscript. Authors’ contributions, data accessibility, and reference sections should be formatted according to research article specifications. Our sister journal, Functional Ecology, has published an Editorial on writing good integrative review articles.

Mini-reviews: short (2000 – 5000 words and up to 3 figures) and focus on recent developments in their field, rather than providing an exhaustive review of the literature. Like Essay Reviews articles that propose new ideas or a provocative new direction for a discipline within plant ecology and intend to challenge currently accepted views are encouraged. Mini-reviews should have a numbered abstract of no more than 200 words, section headings must be short and informative and no more than four figures may be included. Authors’ contributions, data accessibility, and reference sections should be formatted according to research article specifications.

Forum: short communications presenting opinions on, or responses to, material published in the journal. Reanalysis of the original data presented in the focal article is encouraged, but new data should not generally be presented. Forums articles should be submitted in a timely manner, ideally within 12 months of publication of the original article. Articles will be assessed by the journal Editorial Board and, if deemed to be of sufficiently broad interest to our readership, will usually be sent for external peer review. If accepted, they will be held from publication while the authors of the original article are invited to respond. Authors of the original article are not required to write a Forum response and are given a set time frame if they choose to do so. If accepted, both Forum articles will then be published together in an issue. If factual errors with the data or analyses presented in the original article come to light, they will be investigated before publication of the Forum article(s) and a correction notice will be published either instead of or in addition to the Forum article(s).

Research Highlight: short (up to 2500 words including abstract and references), positive assessments of an article that appears in the same issue, highlighting that article's scientific significance. Commentaries are commissioned by the journal Editors and are usually written by one of the reviewers of the article they refer to. Commentaries do not have an abstract, but the first paragraph needs to refer to the related article. The structure of the main text is flexible.

Biological Flora of the British Isles: autecological accounts of plant species native to the British Isles. See a recent accounts for the specific format articles must follow. All offers of new contributions should in the first instance be discussed with the Biological Flora Editor.
