Author Guidelines
Quick checklist for initial submission
Please ensure that your article fits within the journal’s Aims and Scope and that you have read our Editorial Policies before submitting your article.
Manuscripts must be written in English. Here are some useful writing resources:
Guide to scientific writing
Guide to getting published
Authors for whom English is not your first language may wish to consider using a professional editing service before submission, e.g. Wiley's editing services. The use of these services does not guarantee acceptance or preference for publication.
To simplify the process for authors we now differentiate between initial and revised submissions. Initial submissions can be submitted in any file type providing they adhere to the following requirements:
Single column, double line spaced
Within the word count of 8,500 words. A clear justification must be given in the cover letter for manuscripts over the word count
Line and page numbers
Clearly defined manuscript structure as standard: Abstract (must be numbered according to journal style), Author details, Keywords, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Data Availability Statement, References, Figures and Tables with captions
Figures and Tables can be embedded within the text where referenced to facilitate reviewing
Statement of where you intend to archive your data
Your manuscript may be returned to you if these requirements are not met.
If you are asked to submit a new version or revision you must comply with the full specifications explained below.

Review
The editors welcome synthetic review articles providing novel insight and synthesis on topical subjects of general interest to the readership. Please note that we are not looking to publish papers that simply review the literature; JAE reviews still need to provide genuine advances in our ecological thinking. See here for previously published examples.
Concepts in Animal Ecology
These are short essays on emerging ideas and research areas or novel perspectives on classic concepts. We are especially interested in new ways of thinking about animal ecology, whether articles further develop a classic concept or discuss ideas and prospects in an emerging area of research. Importantly, Concepts in Animal Ecology are not simply reviews of a topic, nor should they be solely about an author's own work. Instead, the essays should be thought-provoking, novel, or controversial perspectives on a concept related to animal ecology. The best Concepts in Animal Ecology essays also provide a framework for future research on the topic. Data can be presented but need not be. Submissions are limited to 3000 words (Including title page, abstract, and references list) and up to four tables or figures. Authors wishing to submit a Concepts in Animal Ecology article are welcome to contact the editorial office to discuss the idea prior to submission.
Long-term Studies in Animal Ecology
These are balanced, comprehensive and concise syntheses of well-established field or laboratory study systems that reflect the heritage of seminal papers published in the Journal of Animal Ecology whilst providing future research directions and/or paradigm shifts. Targeted at a broad ecological audience, these papers appraise the trajectory of a focal, long-term study and critically evaluate its impact on our current understanding of ecological theory. Manuscripts should be limited to one specific topic for which the study system has been an especially relevant biological model and are not intended to reflect all the topics that have been addressed in previous research on the study system. Long-term studies in Animal Ecology papers are expected to primarily report on previously published findings rather than providing new data analysis, although exceptions will be considered by the Editors. Authors interested in submitting such a manuscript should first send a proposal (~500 words) to the Editorial Office.
Further guidelines and published papers can be viewed here. Please note this paper type was previously known as a 'Synthesis'.
Research Methods Guide
These are instructional papers that aim to serve as a practical guide for animal ecologists in using a specific experimental or theoretical model or system. Further guidelines and published papers can be viewed here.
