Author Guidelines
Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment publishes timely, interesting, and informative articles on all aspects of ecology, environmental science, and related disciplines. The journal focuses on current ecological issues and environmental challenges and is designed to appeal to readers from a broad range of specialties and backgrounds. Papers should therefore be understandable and of interest to those reading outside their own area of expertise.
Readership
Professional ecologists and environmental scientists from a wide range of backgrounds (academia, federal agencies, NGOs), working in all sub-disciplines of ecology
Scientists working in related disciplines (eg conservation, restoration, biogeochemistry)
Scientists working with ecological data and concepts (eg ecological economists, statisticians)
Resource managers, policymakers, educators, and other interested groups and individuals
Categories of Papers Published in Frontiers
Frontiers features three types of peer-reviewed papers:
Research Communications: relatively short, high-impact primary research papers, with implications for policy making and/or resource management
Reviews: synthesis papers on a wide range of ecology and environmental-science based topics, featuring a strong Conclusions section, again highlighting practical implications for policy making and/or resource management
Concepts and Questions: review-type papers, but which showcase ideas not yet widely accepted by the scientific community
All articles are subject to peer review before they can be accepted for publication.
Publication Fees – Option 1: Page Charges
The publication fee for Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment is $75.00 per printed journal page. The Frontiers page charge form will be provided in the e-proofing email from Wiley you’ll receive when the proofs of your accepted paper are ready to review. The contact details where the invoice will be sent and the number of pages in your article need to be included in the completed form.
After submitting the completed page charge form along with your proof corrections, you’ll receive an invoice for the page charges.
Page charges apply only to Research Communications, Reviews, and Concepts and Questions article categories in Frontiers (page charges do not apply to Write Back letters or other sections of the journal). Following online publication, authors are permitted to post the final, published PDF of their article on their personal website or institutional repository, but not to networking sites such as LinkedIn or ResearchGate or to other social media sites.
Publication Fees – Option 2: OnlineOpen for Open Access Publication
Authors who wish to publish their accepted articles as fully open access are now able to do so through OnlineOpen, Wiley’s open access option (https://authorservices.wiley.com/author-resources/Journal-Authors/open-access/onlineopen.html). Articles published as OnlineOpen do not have page charges as in Option 1 above.
After your accepted Frontiers article is sent to production, you will receive an email from Wiley Author Services with a link to your “My Publication” page on your Author Services Dashboard. Here you can opt for your article to be published as OnlineOpen upon payment of the open access publication fee. The OnlineOpen option for publishing your article as open access applies only to Research Communications, Reviews, and Concepts and Questions article categories.
The OnlineOpen fee for publishing your article as open access is $2,900 for non-members and $2,500 for ESA members. The discount is based on the membership status of the corresponding author.
