Instructions to Authors
Statement of Scope
In 2020 Advances in Nutrition (Advances) celebrates the 10th anniversary of its founding in 2010. Since 2019, Advances has been the American Society for Nutrition’s highest ranked journal by Impact Factor, with a 2019 Impact Factor of over 7.265. About 60% of online visits from the researchers, clinicians, educators, public health officials, and others who visit Advances for highlights of key findings in nutrition come from outside of North America. Membership in ASN includes a subscription to the online version of Advances. Advances publishes reviews and perspectives by authors from 5 continents and is distributed worldwide to more than 2700 institutions, in addition to personal subscribers and ASN members.
Advances publishes literature reviews focused on key findings and recent research in all areas of interest to nutritional scientists and biomedical researchers. This includes nutrition-related research efforts directed toward biochemical, molecular, and genetic studies utilizing experimental animal models, domestic animals, and human participants. The other major foci of the journal are in clinical nutrition, epidemiology and public health, and nutrition education. Review articles focus on progress made during the past few years rather than research developments over a broad, historical timeframe.
In addition to review articles, Advances publishes reports and position papers from the ASN, and Nutrient Information briefs which outline the dietary requirements, food sources, deficiencies, and other important information about the nutrient. All submitted material with scientific content will undergo peer review by the Editors or their designees before acceptance for publication.
Katherine L. Tucker, Ph.D. is Editor-in-Chief of Advances. With the assistance and recommendation of Associate Editors (selected for their expertise in specific nutrition disciplines), the Editor-in-Chief accepts or rejects submitted manuscripts. Associate Editors are responsible for identifying reviewers for manuscripts assigned to them, and making a decision based on the reviews submitted. Manuscripts accepted for publication are reviewed by an Editorial Board Member, an ad hoc reviewer, and a staff Assistant Editor. Meta-analyses and other articles with complex statistical analyses may also be reviewed by a member of ASN’s Statistical Review Board. A full list of Advances Editors and Editorial Board Members is available on the Advance Editorial Board members page.
Manuscripts accepted for publication undergo formatting and copyediting. The Version of Record is published on Advance Access about 1 month after acceptance. Beginning in mid-2021, Advances expects to begin publishing the accepted version of manuscripts online shortly after the author license is signed and open access charges, if authors select an open access license, are paid. Advances issues are published in odd-numbered months (i.e. January, March, May, etc.) comprising manuscripts that have been published on Advance Access.
Submission Procedures
Manuscript submissions and inquiries are encouraged. ASN’s reduced requirements for initial submissions and the more detailed instructions for revisions can be found in Manuscript Preparation Instructions. Manuscript should be submitted using the Advances manuscript submission system. If you have questions about submitting or encounter problems in the submission or peer review process, you can contact the Advances editorial office by email at: advances@nutrition.org. Questions related to the submission of a manuscript or changes in a manuscript submission should be submitted by the manuscript corresponding author. All correspondence from journal staff regarding a manuscript submission will be directed to the manuscript’s corresponding author.
Types of Manuscripts
Reviews, Perspectives, Letters to the Editor, Supplements and Symposia, and Corrections are shared article types across ASN’s Journals Portfolio, and are described on the General Instructions page.
Systematic reviews should be registered in PROSPERO and should include a Methods and Results section. The recommended word count for systematic reviews is 7,500 words (not counting references, tables, or figures). A completed PRISMA flow diagram must be submitted as a figure for publication in the review article. For meta-analyses and systematic reviews, a PRISMA checklist must be uploaded as a supplemental file for peer review.
