Manuscript Structure
The following types of articles will be considered for publication:
Original articles
In print, original articles should not exceed 10 printed pages. This equals about 3500 words, scientific documentation (tables, images) and a reference list, which for original articles as a rule should not exceed 50 references. The abstract, legends and references are not included in the word-count. Manuscripts exceeding 3500 words might be returned to the author for abbreviation. As a rule, a number of 5 figures and/or tables is acceptable. Any documentation in excess of this quantity is subject to approval by the Editors. Authors should specify the word count of their manuscript (excluding abstract and references) on the title page of the manuscript. Documentation in excess of the maximum word count or images/tables can be submitted as supplementary material available on-line only.
Brief reports
Brief reports can be either a short manuscript on a scientific study or a report on a case or short case series of particular scientific or diagnostic interest. A brief report will have a maximum of 1500 words, not counting abstract, legends or references. A maximum of 3 figures and/or tables will be accepted and a maximum of 15 references. The abstract will have no more than 150 words. Authors should specify the word count of their manuscript (excluding abstract and references) on the title page of the manuscript.
A brief report of a case or case series will present original observations, new insights into pathogenetic mechanisms and/or diagnostic criteria.
A brief report on a scientific study will contain a report on a completed study, the scope of which does not justify a full research article. Articles on technical advances would typically be a brief report.
Invited reviews
As a rule, review articles are by invitation only. Authors with the intention to write a review article might contact the Editors and submit an outline of the intended review article, prior to formal submission. Acceptance of such proposals is entirely the prerogative of the Editors. Review articles as a rule will not contain more than 4500 words (excluding abstract, legends and references). Figures and tables are welcomed but should only present material essential for the message of the review article. Didactic schematic drawings are welcomed. As a rule, the number of references should not exceed 75. Authors should specify the word count of their manuscript (excluding abstract and references) on the title page of the manuscript.Any documentation in excess of this quantity is subject to approval by the Editors.
Annual review papers
Annual review papers are by invitation only in the context of a full review issue.
Invited editorials
As a rule, Invited Editorials are by invitation only. Invited Editorials will not contain more than 1000 words, 10 references, and 1 figure or table. An abstract should not be present. Authors should specify the word count of their manuscript (excluding references) on the title page of the manuscript; any documentation in excess of this quantity is subject to approval by the Editors. Invited Editorials are subject to review by the Editors. Invited Editorials should put the results of the related article in perspective and outline future directions.
Commentaries
Commentaries are brief reviews on a timely topic or on an article of particular interest in the issue of the Journal. Reviewers of a manuscript selected for a commentary might be invited by the Editors to write this. Commentaries will have a maximum of 1000 words and a maximum of 10 references. An abstract should not be present. As a rule, they will not contain figures or tables. A didactic schematic drawing might be included. Authors should specify the word count of their manuscript (excluding references) on the title page of the manuscript.
Reports on meetings, symposia and conferences that deal with surgical, experimental or molecular pathology might be submitted as a Commentary. A proposal for such commentary should be submitted to the Editors prior to formal submission. Such reports should include both a statement of the purpose of the meeting or the trial and a summary of the findings. In addition, these reports should include a critical commentary on whether or not a consensus was reached, as well as any recommendations for future research.
Letters to the Editors
A letter to the Editors as a rule will contain a reaction to a paper published in the Journal. These might be published at the discretion of the Editors. Such letters will be sent to the authors of the original paper with an invitation to respond. Letters and eventual responses will be published together. Letters may also be submitted as a brief comment on timely topics. Letters should be limited to 500 words and will have no more than 5 pertinent references. As a rule, they will not contain any figures or tables. An abstract should not be present. Authors should specify the word count of their manuscript (excluding references) on the title page of the manuscript.
