BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Ethics in publishing

Please see our information pages on Ethics in publishing and Ethical guidelines for journal publication

Studies in humans and animals

If the work involves the use of human subjects, the author should ensure that the work described has been carried out in accordance with The Code of Ethics of the World Medical Association (Declaration of Helsinki) for experiments involving humans. The manuscript should be in line with the Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals and aim for the inclusion of representative human populations (sex, age and ethnicity) as per those recommendations. The terms sex and gender should be used correctly.

Authors should include a statement in the manuscript that informed consent was obtained for experimentation with human subjects. The privacy rights of human subjects must always be observed.

All animal experiments should comply with the ARRIVE guidelines and should be carried out in accordance with the U.K. Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act, 1986 and associated guidelines, EU Directive 2010/63/EU for animal experiments, or the National Institutes of Health guide for the care and use of Laboratory animals (NIH Publications No. 8023, revised 1978) and the authors should clearly indicate in the manuscript that such guidelines have been followed. The sex of animals must be indicated, and where appropriate, the influence (or association) of sex on the results of the study.

Submission declaration and verification

Submission of an article implies that the work described has not been published previously (except in the form of an abstract, a published lecture or academic thesis, see 'Multiple, redundant or concurrent publication' for more information), that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that its publication is approved by all authors and tacitly or explicitly by the responsible authorities where the work was carried out, and that, if accepted, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, including electronically without the written consent of the copyright-holder. To verify originality, your article may be checked by the originality detection service Crossref Similarity Check.

Submitted articles must follow the instructions below, in accordance with the manuscript submission standards proposed by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) (www.icmje.org).

Manuscripts are submitted anonymously, first, to the editorial board of Annales médico-psychologiques, then to at least two peer-reviewers.

Preprints

Please note that preprints can be shared anywhere at any time, in line with Elsevier's sharing policy. Sharing your preprints e.g. on a preprint server will not count as prior publication (see 'Multiple, redundant or concurrent publication' for more information).

Changes to authorship

Authors are expected to consider carefully the list and order of authors before submitting their manuscript and provide the definitive list of authors at the time of the original submission. Any addition, deletion or rearrangement of author names in the authorship list should be made only before the manuscript has been accepted and only if approved by the journal Editor. To request such a change, the Editor must receive the following from the corresponding author: (a) the reason for the change in author list and (b) written confirmation (e-mail, letter) from all authors that they agree with the addition, removal or rearrangement. In the case of addition or removal of authors, this includes confirmation from the author being added or removed. Only in exceptional circumstances will the Editor consider the addition, deletion or rearrangement of authors after the manuscript has been accepted. While the Editor considers the request, publication of the manuscript will be suspended. If the manuscript has already been published in an online issue, any requests approved by the Editor will result in a corrigendum.

SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS

Papers must be submitted online on the journal's submission site at the following address: www.editorialmanager.com/amepsy

MS Word and WordPerfect can be used for text files. Texts should not be submitted in PDF format.

Please note – Electronic submission requires separate files for

the title-page: the title of the article, in English and French, the name of the corresponding author, with his full address (institution), postal, telephone and e-mail. Giving this information separately ensures anonymous peer-reviewing.

the manuscript: abstract, key-words in English and French, text, references, tables with legends, legends of the figures. This separate file should not disclose the authors’ names, address or phone number.

Figures must always be supplied in separate files, one file per document.

In case of technical difficulties, please contact authorsupport@elsevier.com

MANUSCRIPT TYPES AND WORD COUNT

Submitted manuscripts should correspond to one of the following headings. Please adhere to the following maximum word and reference counts when submitting manuscripts. The word count excludes References, Tables, Figures captions and Supplementary data.

Memoir or original article: Maximum 20 typed pages, including French and English abstracts, key-words, with a maximum of 40 references and 5 tables or figures, in all 33 000 signs, spaces excluded.

Communication (presented orally during the Society’s sessions): Maximum 8 typed pages, including French and English abstracts, key-words, with a maximum of 30 references, and 5 tables or figures), in all 13 500 signs, spaces excluded.

Contribution to the continuing medical education section: presented:

- Either as a whole dossier of maximum 30 typed pages (49 500 signs, spaces excluded), with French and English abstracts, a maximum of 45 references and 10 tables or figures.

- Or as three independent dossiers, each of a maximum of 10 typed pages (16 500 signs, spaces excluded, with French and English abstracts, key-words, 15 references and three tables or figures)

It is recommended to summarize the main points of the CME dossier in a box.

The CME dossier presents clinical updates on situations encountered by practitioners in their daily practice. These updates are also of use to specialists, to keep abreast of the latest developments in neighboring disciplines. Originality is not required for these contributions, nor an exhaustive approach. But it is essential to present the case in a synthesized and didactic form.

Book review: It is a presentation of a recent book published in French. For each book, the presentation will be between one and eight typed pages.

Biographical Dictionary: It presents the biography of a famous psychiatrist. Maximum 20 typed pages, i.e. 33 000 signs, spaces excluded, with a maximum of 40 references. There will be short French and English abstracts, and key-words.

PRESENTATION OF MANUSCRIPTS

All manuscripts should be typed double-spaced with a margin on the left side of the page, recto only. The pages should be numbered. A normal typed page in Word, Times New Roman 12 double-spaced will contain 25 lines, i.e. 1 650 signs, spaces excluded, to a page.

Any manuscript that does not meet publication standards cannot be reviewed by the anonymous experts and will be returned to the main author.

Title page

The title, and the names and affiliations of the authors. At the bottom of this first page, the full address with telephone, e-mail, and affiliation of the corresponding author, will be communicated.

Abstract and key-words

For all contributions, except book reviews, two abstracts are provided, one in French, and one in English.

The French abstract – about 15 lines, will include no abbreviations nor references (maximum 800 signs for original articles, or 400 signs for other contributions). 5 key-words will be provided.

For original articles only, the English abstract, or summary will be longer – two typed pages, or 50 lines or maximum 3 300 signs, as it is important for our international readers to apprehend the meaning of the articles written in French, in order to use them as references. The English title of the article will be communicated. The English abstracts will be structured, with objectives, patients or materials and methods, results, conclusions.

For the other article types, the English abstract will be of 25 lines, i.e. 200/ 250 words or 1 500 signs, and will be structured in order to synthesize the article. An English title will be given, and 4 to 5 key-word in conformity to the Medical Subject Headings of the Index medicus.

Key-words should not repeat words found in the title: they should be pertinent and descriptive. In any case, the editors will check that they conform to the Medical Subject Headings of the Index Medicus, revised annually.

Text

The text must be written in a clear and concise style. It should be understandable to readers outside the field of psychiatry/psychology and to those who do not use French as a mother-tongue.

The first person is not used in scientific editing. New paragraphs should not be too numerous, but a long paragraph will improve by being subdivided. Situations from the past will be described in imperfect, tense, or more frequently, in past tense. This will be the case for headings such as patients and methods, results, observation, discussion or commentaries, when previous experiences are reported by authors. When names of authors are mentioned in the text, if there are only two, both names will be given. If there are more than two, the first name will be followed by « et al ».

Titles and subtitles of similar importance should be consistently indicated.

The Annals now accept articles in English that are subject to the same recommendations as articles in French.

Abbreviations

Only common abbreviations will be accepted, in small numbers. The full term always appears first in the text, between brackets, before the first abbreviation appears, unless it is an international unit. There will be not abbreviation in the title, nor if possible, in the abstract.

Numbers, units, symbols and commercial names

Scientific symbols and units must accord with the international norm. Drugs and medication are defined according to their common names (without a capital initial). The name of the specialty can be given, between brackets, with the sign (registered mark), and the name of the pharmaceutical company, if the drug is not well known.

Acknowledgements

Collate acknowledgements in a separate section at the end of the article before the references and do not, therefore, include them on the title page, as a footnote to the title or otherwise. List here those individuals who provided help during the research (e.g., providing language help, writing assistance or proof reading the article, etc.).

Funding source

Authors are asked to mention any financial support they may have for the conduct of the research and/or the preparation of the article.

References

The bibliography should not exceed, if possible, 40 references.

References are listed on a separate page. They are numbered consecutively in alphabetical order. They are identified in the text, in the tables and in legends by arabic numerals between square brackets. Numbers are separated by commas when they are consecutive or not, and by a hyphen when there are at least 3 consecutive numbers, with only the extreme numbers indicated. Examples: [5,7], [9-11], [5,7,9-11,13]. An article will only give references related to its composition. The referenced material should always be within reach for the readers. All the references given must be listed at the end of the article, and vice versa, all references listed correspond to a citation in the text. Up to 6 authors, all the authors’ names will be given. From 7 onwards, the six names will be followed by a comma, and « et al ».

Articles accepted but not yet published may still be cited by indicating the journal, the year, the volume and « in press ». References to personal communications, memoirs, manuscripts still in preparation, or submitted to journals will only be accepted between brackets in the text and should not be in the list of references.

References are in « Vancouver » format (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals. Fifth edition. N Engl J Med 1997;336:309-16).

Tables

Tables must be numbered using Arabic numerals according to their order of appearance in the text. Their location must be specified by a reference between parentheses (table 1).

All tables should be typewritten and supplied on separate sheets, without vertical lines. The title should be written above the table (Table 1. Table legend), and all notes necessary for comprehension, without referral to the text, should be given below. The meaning of unusual abbreviations and signs (e.g. ± SD and SEM) should be given.

Figures

Figures (graphs, drawings, or photographs) must always be supplied in separate files, one file per document.

They must be numbered in Arabic numerals according to their order of appearance in the text. Their location must be specified by a reference between parentheses (figure 1). There should be no repetition between the data given in the tables and figures, and the number of illustrations should be kept to a minimum.

Photos should be provided in digital format: JPEG (.jpeg), TIFF (.tif) or PDF (.pdf) with 300 dpi minimum resolution for black and white or colour photographs and 500 to 1000 dpi for graphs or drawing. Word and Excel format are also acceptable. Figures should not be created with commercial software (Powerpoint®, Paintbrush®, MacDrawPro®). In these formats they cannot be used for professional publishing.

Each figure must be accompanied by a caption. The legends do not appear in the illustration. They are given in a list at the end of the article, on a separate sheet and consist of a short title, and sufficient explanatory notes to make the figure comprehensible without referral to the text. Abbreviation must be defined.

Important: figures and tables previously published elsewhere can only be reproduced with the permission of the authors and the original copyright holders. Authors will do the necessary steps.

Supplementary material

Supplementary material such as applications, images and sound clips, can be published with your article to enhance it. Submitted supplementary items are published exactly as they are received (Excel or PowerPoint files will appear as such online). Please submit your material together with the article and supply a concise, descriptive caption for each supplementary file.

Authors are invited to refer to the artwork quality instructions at the following link: http://www.elsevier.com/artworkinstructions

All authors of the publication must declare any relations that may be considered as a potential competing interest.

1. If there is no competing interest, the following note must be added directly to the manuscript: “The author[s] declare[s] that he [they] has [have] no competing interest”.

2. If there is one (or more) competing(s) interest, all should be listed at the end of the manuscript (before the bibliographical references) in accordance with the presentation below. The initials of the author(s) concerned, and the name of the company associated should be added to the potential competing of interest needing to be declared.

3. In case the author has not transmitted anything, the following mention will be published in the article: "Disclosure of interest: the authors have not transmitted their competing of interest.
