Instructions to Authors
Free format submission
The Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology now offers free format submission for a simplified and streamlined submission process.
Before you submit, you will need:
Your manuscript: this can be a single file including text, figures, and tables, or separate files – whichever you prefer. All required sections should be contained in your manuscript, including abstract, introduction, methods, results, and conclusions. Figures and tables should have legends. References may be submitted in any style or format, as long as it is consistent throughout the manuscript. If the manuscript, figures or tables are difficult for you to read, they will also be difficult for the editors and reviewers. If your manuscript is difficult to read, the editorial office may send it back to you for revision.
The title page of the manuscript, including statements relating to our ethics and integrity policies within the manuscript when and where applicable:
data availability statement
funding statement
conflict of interest disclosure
ethics approval statement
patient consent statement
permission to reproduce material from other sources
clinical trial registration
(Why is this important? We need to uphold rigorous ethical standards for the research we consider for publication.)
Your co-author details, including affiliation and email address. (Why is this important? We need to keep all co-authors informed of the outcome of the peer review process.)
An ORCID ID, freely available at https://orcid.org. (Why is this important? Your article, if accepted and published, will be attached to your ORCID profile. Institutions and funders are increasingly requiring authors to have ORCID IDs.)
To submit, login at https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jce and create a new submission. Follow the submission steps as required and submit the manuscript.
If you are invited to revise your manuscript after peer review, the journal will also request the revised manuscript to be formatted according to journal requirements as described below.
Statement of Purpose
The Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology publishes original, peer-reviewed articles on all aspects of cardiovascular electrophysiology, including:
(a) ion channels and biophysics;
(b) molecular biology;
(c) pharmacology;
(d) cellular and in vivo electrophysiology;
(e) clinical electrophysiology; and
(f) catheter ablation.
All articles are sent for peer review. Articles from the Editor’s institution are processed by a guest editor.
Preprint your manuscript while it’s under review
Beginning in early 2020, the Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology is participating in a pilot of the under review service, Wiley’s new initiative to streamline the early sharing of research and open up the peer review process. Authors can now opt to preprint their manuscript during the submission process and showcase their work to the global research community as a preprint, before it is accepted or published.
The under review service is powered by Authorea, an open research platform for all your research outputs, including data, figures, and preprints. By opting-in authors can:
Seamlessly preprint at the same time you submit your research for publication
Share your work early, while indicating it is being considered at a specific journal
Track the peer review process openly in real time
Immediately make their work citable, discoverable, and easily shareable
Get additional community feedback that can be used to improve your manuscript
COVID-19 manuscripts will receive priority throughout the peer-review and production workflows

Manuscript Content
Title Page
Please include a brief and descriptive title of the article; each author’s full name, highest academic degree and affiliations; acknowledgement of ALL sources of financial support; disclosure statement; and the name, address, and e-mail address of the corresponding author responsible for editorial correspondence and reprint requests.
Authorship. As stated in the ICMJE recommendations, credit for authorship requires all of the following:1) Substantial contributions to the conception and design or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of the data. 2) Substantial contributions to the drafting of the articles or critical revision for important intellectual content. 3) Final approval of the version to be published. 4) Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the article are appropriately investigated and resolved.
After submission of a manuscript, no changes in authorship will be permitted, including changes in corresponding author or the order of authors.
Extensive Authorship. No more than 10 authors should be listed in the article byline. If more than 10 authors fit the criteria for authorship as defined above, the authors should be listed as: “Author 1,…, Author 10, and other members of the XX Study Group/Consortium.” The members of the XX Study Group/Consortium will be listed in the text of the article after the ‘Conclusions’ and prior to the ‘References’ using the heading ‘Group/Consortium Members’ as Author 11,…last Group/Consortium Author. Please include academic degree(s) where applicable.
According to NIH guidelines, personal author names are included in MEDLINE when the author names appear in the article byline or are explicitly identified anywhere else in the text of the article as the authors or as members of the writing group or writing committee for the article. There is currently no limit to the number of authors that may be included for a MEDLINE citation. The authors are listed in MEDLINE in the same order in which they are listed in the journal article.
Also, according to NIH Guidelines, Group/Consortium names are listed in MEDLINE when such names appear in the article byline. At least one person’s name must accompany a group name (e.g., “John Jones and other members of the XX Study Group”). When both personal and group names appear in the byline, they appear in PubMed displays in the order in which they are published in the article. Names published in the article byline appear in PubMed before names that may be published elsewhere in the article.
Abstract Requirements
*Abstracts are NOT required for EP Images, Arryhtmia Rounds, Editorial-Invited, Abstracts-AF Symposium, Letters to the Editor, and Response to Letter to the Editor article types.*
Unstructured Abstract
Fellows Core Curriculum and Point of View article types
Include a brief unstructured abstract.
Structured Abstract
All other article types
Divide the abstract into sections: Introduction (one or two sentences), Methods and Results, and a Conclusion that states the importance and potential implications of the observations.
Key Words
The abstract should be followed by 5 to 10 key words suitable for indexing.
Text
Organize into sections: Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion, with appropriate subheadings to make the sections easily understood. Explain abbreviations at first mention, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses, and limit use only to a few commonly accepted words. References, tables, and figures should be cited in numerical order. Avoid jargon, clichés, and laboratory slang. References to pacemakers, defibrillators, and leads must adhere to code structures and usage conventions set forth by NASPE/BPEG code. Place acknowledgments at the end of the text, before references. Authors whose native language is not English are strongly advised to seek appropriate grammatical assistance. In general, manuscripts should not exceed 20 double-spaced typed pages, 8 figures, 3 tables, and 35 references.
References
All references should be numbered consecutively in order of appearance and should be as complete as possible. In text citations should cite references in consecutive order using Arabic superscript numerals. Sample references follow:
Journal article:
1. King VM, Armstrong DM, Apps R, Trott JR. Numerical aspects of pontine, lateral reticular, and inferior olivary projections to two paravermal cortical zones of the cat cerebellum. J Comp Neurol 1998;390:537-551.
Book:
2. Voet D, Voet JG. Biochemistry. New York: John Wiley & Sons; 1990. 1223 p.
Please note that journal title abbreviations should conform to the practices of Chemical Abstracts. For more information about AMA reference style - AMA Manual of Style
Figure Legends
Legends should be concise but comprehensive – the figure and its legend must be understandable without reference to the text. Include definitions of any symbols used and define/explain all abbreviations and units of measurement.
Figures
Although authors are encouraged to send the highest-quality figures possible, for peer-review purposes, a wide variety of formats, sizes, and resolutions are accepted. Click here for the basic figure requirements for figures submitted with manuscripts for initial peer review, as well as the more detailed post-acceptance figure requirements.
Color figures. Figures submitted in colour may be reproduced in color online free of charge. Please note, however, that it is preferable that line figures (e.g. graphs and charts) are supplied in black and white so that they are legible if printed by a reader in black and white. If an author would prefer to have figures printed in colour in hard copies of the journal, a fee will be charged by the Publisher.
Tables
Tables must be self-explanatory and supplement, not duplicate, the text. Number brief titles in Arabic numerals according to the order they are mentioned in the text. Each table should be typed on a separate page and designed for economy of space and readability. Notes designated in the tables and all abbreviations should be defined in a footnote. Abbreviations should be identified in alphabetical order. Footnote designations should be used in the following order: *, +, +, §.
Article Types
Letters to the Editor
Letters should be typed double spaced, and should not exceed 500 words. Letters will be reviewed and are subject to editing. If accepted for publication, a copy of the letter will be sent to the author(s) of the original article, if applicable. The author(s) will have an opportunity to respond with new material that will be considered for publication with the letter.
Original Articles
Original Research articles.
Original - Devices
Original articles that pertain to cardiac implantable electrical devices.
Original - Electrophysiology
Original articles that pertain to clinical and basic cardiac electrophysiology, catheter ablation, and the general management of cardiac arrhythmias.
Case Report
Case reports should present preliminary information on a technique or idea that is likely to find widespread application. For cases that illustrate important teaching points, using the article types EP Rounds or Device Rounds may be more appropriate. Please limit case reports to 6 pages for all text, including a 100-word abstract and a maximum of three illustrations.
EP Rounds
These submissions are typically based on tracings or other EP graphics. The manuscript should begin by presenting the clinical problem, key figure(s) and pertinent information, and ask the reader your question(s). Good quality tracings are important and should have minimal labelling and annotation to allow the reader to form their own conclusions without assistance. The reader should then be guided to a solution with the teaching points presented in the commentaries. Clearly label the manuscript “EP Rounds”. No abstract is necessary. Please limit the manuscript to 6 pages (double-spaced text) or less (including references and a maximum of three illustrations).
Device Rounds
These submissions should begin by presenting the clinical problem, key figure and pertinent information and ask the reader your question(s). Next, guide the reader to a solution and reveal your teaching points in the commentaries. Clearly label the manuscript “Device Rounds” upon submission. No abstract necessary. Please restrict to no more than 6 typewritten pages (all included) and three illustrations.
Patient Education
Patient Education papers should include a statement about the intended audience and usage of the article in the ‘Introduction’ section. The paper should be written using language intended for the general public to understand.
Brief Communication
Brief Communication is a short report of original studies, evaluations, unique first-time reports of clinical case series. Should not exceed 1200 words (excluding tables, figures, acknowledgments, references, and supplementary material). No more than a total of 3 tables and/or figures. Up to 15 references is acceptable.
Editorials
Editorial comments that express a point of view.
Editorial - Invited
This article type is by INVITATION ONLY. If you are invited to write an editorial, you must submit using this article type and include a cover letter referencing the manuscript ID number included in your invitation.
Review
Reviews on a topic of interest in either clinical electrophysiology and pacing or basic or translational science.

Expects Data Sharing
Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology expects that data supporting the results in the paper will be archived in an appropriate public repository. Authors are required to provide a data availability statement to describe the availability or the absence of shared data. When data have been shared, authors are required to include in their data availability statement a link to the repository they have used, and to cite the data they have shared. Whenever possible the scripts and other artefacts used to generate the analyses presented in the paper should also be publicly archived. If sharing data compromises ethical standards or legal requirements then authors are not expected to share it.
