Guide for Authors
Aims and scope
The American Heart Journal will consider for publication suitable articles on topics pertaining to the broad discipline of cardiovascular disease. Our goal is to provide the reader primary investigation, scholarly review, and opinion concerning the practice of cardiovascular medicine. We especially encourage submission of 3 types of reports that are not frequently seen in cardiovascular journals: negative clinical studies, reports on study designs, and studies involving the organization of medical care. The Journal does not accept individual case reports or original articles involving bench laboratory or animal research.
Benefits to authors
We also provide many author benefits, such as free PDFs, a liberal copyright policy, special discounts on Elsevier publications and much more. Please click here for more information on our author services.
Please see our Guide for Authors for information on article submission. If you require any further information or help, please visit our Support Center
Your Paper Your Way
We now differentiate between the requirements for new and revised submissions. You may choose to submit your manuscript as a single Word or PDF file to be used in the refereeing process. Only when your paper is at the revision stage, will you be requested to put your paper in to a 'correct format' for acceptance and provide the items required for the publication of your article.

Information for Authors
All articles except letters to the editor and supplements must be submitted online at https://www.editorialmanager.com/amhj/default.aspx. The American Heart Journal no longer accepts submissions by mail. Letters to the editor must be submitted directly to Rebecca L. Hines, Managing Editor, at AHJ@dm.duke.edu. Supplement proposals must be submitted to Craig Smith at C.Smith@Elsevier.com. The Journal will consider for publication suitable articles on topics pertaining to the broad discipline of cardiovascular disease. Our goal is to provide the reader with primary investigation, scholarly review, and opinion concerning the practice of cardiovascular medicine. We especially encourage submission of 3 types of reports that are not frequently seen in cardiovascular journals: negative clinical studies, reports on study designs, and studies involving the organization of medical care. (For more information, see "What We Publish in the American Heart Journal and Why," by Daniel B. Mark, MD, MPH, [Am Heart J 2007;154:1-2].) The Journal does not accept individual case reports or original articles involving bench laboratory or animal research. All communications relating to the editorial management of the Journal should be sent to Rebecca L. Hines, Managing Editor, at AHJ@dm.duke.edu.
Editorial policies. Statements and opinions expressed in the Journal are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the Editor(s) or publisher, and the Editor(s) and publisher disclaim any responsibility or liability for such material. Neither the Editor(s) nor the publisher guarantees, warrants, or endorses any product or service advertised in this publication; neither do they guarantee any claim made by the manufacturer of such product or service. In accordance with the Copyright Act of 1976, which became effective January 1, 1978, the following statement signed by all authors must accompany each manuscript accepted for publication: "The undersigned author(s) transfer all copyright ownership of the manuscript [title of article] to Elsevier Inc., in the event the work is published. The undersigned warrant(s) that the article is original, does not infringe upon any copyright or other proprietary right of any third party, is not under consideration by another journal, and has not been published previously." When a manuscript is accepted for publication, the Copyright Release Form will be issued to authors from the publisher.
Review. All articles are pre-screened by the Editors and Associate Editors. Papers felt not to be competitive for publication or papers not consistent with the editorial priorities of the American Heart Journal will be returned to the authors without review within 4 weeks of submission. All other articles are reviewed by external referees. Acceptance is based on significance, originality, and validity of the material. If the article is accepted for publication, editorial revisions may be made to aid clarity and understanding without altering the meaning.
Sections. The following sections are established features of the Journal. To ensure that the manuscript is considered for one of the following sections, the name of the intended section should appear at the top of the title page.
Clinical Investigations. Original, in-depth clinical investigations.
Curriculum in Cardiology. Concise, comprehensive, contemporary articles presenting core, updated information necessary for the continuing medical education of the modern clinical cardiologist.
Progress in Cardiology. Concise and comprehensive articles devoted to innovative new areas of development in cardiovascular diseases important to the clinical cardiologist.
Trial Designs. Efficient but thorough descriptions of study protocols, including the conceptual issues underlying the hypotheses, the methodology, and planned analysis of a trial. An important part of the evaluation of trial design papers pertains to the likely ability of the investigators to complete the trial as planned. Papers should include target sample size information along with a timeline for enrollment and follow-up. If the trial has already begun enrollment, provide number of patients enrolled as of the date of manuscript submission.
Research Letters. Short, original research articles or brief reports of up to 1500 words and with up to 12 references. May contain up to 3 figures or tables. A short abstract of three sentences or less describing the objective of the letter is required. Online supplemental material is permitted, particularly for additional relevant methods or results.
Letters to the Editor. Brief letters or notes to the Editor regarding published material or information of timely interest. Letters to the Editor should concern only articles that have been published recently in the Journal. A response to the letter will be requested from the authors of the article in question, and both the letter and the response will be published together. Letters to the Editor must be submitted by e-mail to Rebecca L. Hines, Managing Editor, at AHJ@dm.duke.edu. Letters will be published on the Journal's Website only.
Editorials. Brief, substantiated commentary on special subjects.
Supplements. Symposia are considered for publication on the basis of importance of topic, expertise of participants, and scientific quality of articles presented. All supplements undergo peer review. Proprietary sponsorship must be indicated. Supplement proposals must be submitted by e-mail to Craig Smith at C.Smith@Elsevier.com.

• All references mentioned in the Reference List are cited in the text, and vice versa
• Permission has been obtained for use of copyrighted material from other sources (including the Internet)
• A competing interests statement is provided, even if the authors have no competing interests to declare
• Journal policies detailed in this guide have been reviewed
• Referee suggestions and contact details provided, based on journal requirements
Declaration of interest
All authors must disclose any financial and personal relationships with other people or organizations that could inappropriately influence (bias) their work. Examples of potential competing interests include employment, consultancies, stock ownership, honoraria, paid expert testimony, patent applications/registrations, and grants or other funding. Authors must disclose any interests in two places: 1. A summary declaration of interest statement in the title page file (if double anonymized) or the manuscript file (if single anonymized). If there are no interests to declare then please state this: 'Declarations of interest: none'. 2. Detailed disclosures as part of a separate Declaration of Interest form, which forms part of the journal's official records. It is important for potential interests to be declared in both places and that the information matches. More information.
Submission declaration
Submission of an article implies that the work described has not been published previously (except in the form of an abstract, a published lecture or academic thesis, see 'Multiple, redundant or concurrent publication' for more information), that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that its publication is approved by all authors and tacitly or explicitly by the responsible authorities where the work was carried out, and that, if accepted, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, including electronically without the written consent of the copyright-holder.
Preprints
Please note that preprints can be shared anywhere at any time, in line with Elsevier's sharing policy. Sharing your preprints e.g. on a preprint server will not count as prior publication (see 'Multiple, redundant or concurrent publication' for more information).
Use of inclusive language
Inclusive language acknowledges diversity, conveys respect to all people, is sensitive to differences, and promotes equal opportunities. Content should make no assumptions about the beliefs or commitments of any reader; contain nothing which might imply that one individual is superior to another on the grounds of age, gender, race, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, disability or health condition; and use inclusive language throughout. Authors should ensure that writing is free from bias, stereotypes, slang, reference to dominant culture and/or cultural assumptions. We advise to seek gender neutrality by using plural nouns ("clinicians, patients/clients") as default/wherever possible to avoid using "he, she," or "he/she." We recommend avoiding the use of descriptors that refer to personal attributes such as age, gender, race, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, disability or health condition unless they are relevant and valid. These guidelines are meant as a point of reference to help identify appropriate language but are by no means exhaustive or definitive.
Author contributions
For transparency, we encourage authors to submit an author statement file outlining their individual contributions to the paper using the relevant CRediT roles: Conceptualization; Data curation; Formal analysis; Funding acquisition; Investigation; Methodology; Project administration; Resources; Software; Supervision; Validation; Visualization; Roles/Writing - original draft; Writing - review & editing. Authorship statements should be formatted with the names of authors first and CRediT role(s) following. More details and an example
Registration of randomized clinical trials. Any manuscript submitted to the Journal that concerns the design or results of a randomized clinical trial must include the registration site (such as www.clinicaltrials.gov) and the registration number in the Methods section.
Article transfer service
This journal is part of our Article Transfer Service. This means that if the Editor feels your article is more suitable in one of our other participating journals, then you may be asked to consider transferring the article to one of those. If you agree, your article will be transferred automatically on your behalf with no need to reformat. Please note that your article will be reviewed again by the new journal. More information.
Copyright
Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to complete a 'Journal Publishing Agreement' (see more information on this). An e-mail will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript together with a 'Journal Publishing Agreement' form or a link to the online version of this agreement.
Subscribers may reproduce tables of contents or prepare lists of articles including abstracts for internal circulation within their institutions. Permission of the Publisher is required for resale or distribution outside the institution and for all other derivative works, including compilations and translations. If excerpts from other copyrighted works are included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases.
For gold open access articles: Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to complete a 'License Agreement' (more information). Permitted third party reuse of gold open access articles is determined by the author's choice of user license.
Author rights
As an author you (or your employer or institution) have certain rights to reuse your work. More information.
Elsevier supports responsible sharing

Open access
Please visit our Open Access page for more information.
Open access. This journal offers you the option of making your article freely available via the ScienceDirect platform. To prevent any conflict of interest, you can make this choice only after receiving notification that your article has been accepted for publication. The fee of $3,000 excludes taxes and other potential author fees such as color charges. In some cases, institutions and funding bodies have entered into agreement with Elsevier to meet these fees on behalf of their authors. Details of these agreements are available at https://www.elsevier.com/fundingbodies. Authors of accepted articles who wish to take advantage of this option should complete and submit the order form (available at https://www.elsevier.com/locate/openaccessform.pdf). Whatever access option you choose, you retain many rights as an author, including the right to post a revised personal version of your article on your own website. More information can be found here: https://www.elsevier.com/authorsrights.
