Submission guidelines

CANADIAN JOURNAL OF ANESTHESIA

GUIDE FOR AUTHORS

Introduction

We welcome submissions to the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia (CJA). We publish original research and systematic and narrative reviews, and case reports in the fields of Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine, Pain Medicine, and Perioperative Medicine. Accepted articles are published in either English or French according to the language of submission, and the Editorials and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) modules are published in both languages. Original work includes clinical or laboratory investigations and clinical or equipment reports. Reviews include narrative reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and evidence-based clinical updates (EBCUs). The CJA also publishes Guest Editorials, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Modules, Letters to the Editor, and Commentaries, such as best evidence in anesthesia practice (BEAP) and best evidence in critical care medicine (BECCM).

As Instructions for Authors become increasingly harmonized to make it easier for authors submitting to different journals, these Instructions have been modified and updated in various sections under the permission provisions of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) stating the ‘‘Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals: Writing and Editing for Biomedical Publication’’ (posted at: http://www.icmje.org) and the Guide for Authors of Anesthesia & Analgesia (posted at: http://aaeditor.org/GuideforAuthors.pdf). We encourage authors to carefully review these Instructions for Authors prior to manuscript preparation, and at the time of article submission, as requirements change periodically, as well as the standardized reporting guidelines endorsed by the Journal. We strongly encourage authors to refer to the EQUATOR network (http://www.equator-network.org) which provides a host of valuable resources for authors.

Finally, as many members of the Editorial Board of the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia also serve on other editorial boards, we acknowledge the contributions of these editorial boards to these Instructions, through our overlapping editors. Neither the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia nor the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society (CAS) claims ownership of the principles stated in these Instructions. The CAS hereby grants societies, journals and individuals the right to paraphrase or to quote verbatim sections of any length from these instructions without attribution.

Please contact the Editorial Office for pre-submission inquiries, and for any questions or concerns regarding the submission and review process. We endeavour to respond to all questions within 48 hours. Our editorial peer review process is explained in a recently published editorial (Can J Anesth 2007; 54: 1-7). We thank all of our authors for having chosen the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia as the target journal for submission of their scholarly work.

Content and Originality

Only manuscripts containing original material will be considered for publication. Authors planning to submit review articles should first communicate with the Editorial Office to ensure the appropriateness of the subject matter.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published or currently be under consideration for publication elsewhere, either in whole or in part. This guideline applies to both paper and electronic methods of publication; however, it is not applicable with respect to abstracts of scientific meetings or work published in the Cochrane Library. Please contact the Editorial Office if there are questions.

Authorship

General Principles of Authorship

Authorship is a very important aspect of scientific research and scientific publication. ‘‘Authorship credit should be based on 1) substantial contributions to conception and design, acquisition of data, or analysis and interpretation of data; 2) drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content; and 3) final approval of the version to be published. Authors should meet conditions 1, 2, and 3’’.1 All contributors who do not meet the criteria for authorship should be listed in the acknowledgements section. This might include identifying professional colleagues who have critiqued the article prior to submission, and professional writer(s) who have assisted with the technical aspects of the scientific writing. The submission of ghostwritten articles (written by unidentified authors) is not acceptable.

Corresponding Author

Each article must identify the corresponding author who will be the senior/principal author responsible on behalf of all authors for communication with the editorial office, at the time of article submission, and throughout the peer review process.

The title page of each manuscript should clearly identify who is the corresponding author.

Addition/Removal of Authors

The list of names and order of authors should ideally be established at the time of protocol development and trial inception. Occasionally, we receive requests to either add or to remove an author’s name during the review process, more commonly after a major revision. Any change(s) to the list of authors, including the order of authors, will not be considered by the Editor-in-Chief without a letter of request and explanation, signed by all authors.

Authorship Attribution

Since 2011, we have required that each author attests to her/his contribution, and these attestations will be published (Rennie D, Yank V, Emanuel L. When authorship fails: a proposal to make contributors accountable. JAMA 1997; 278: 579-85.) Authors may describe their individual roles concisely and in their own words, given the complex and sometimes unique relationships related to the general term ‘‘co-authorship’’. The attestations should appear immediately after the title page.

Ethical Considerations

Human Studies

Manuscripts describing investigations performed in humans will not be considered for publication unless the study was approved by the authors’ Institutional Review Board (IRB) or the Research Ethics Board (REB) and carried out according to institutional and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines. A statement concerning REB approval and consent procedures must appear at the beginning of the Methods section of the manuscript. We require written consent. If the REB waived the requirement for consent then this needs to be stated explicitly. The name of the governing REB body (hospital or university) must be stated at the beginning of the methods section, in addition to stating the month and year of protocol approval.

Any systematic data gathering efforts in patients or volunteers must also be approved by an REB or adhere to duly recognized local/national regulations. Authors must provide a copy of the REB approval form at the time of article submission. Lack of appropriate documentation will be grounds for rejection.

Case Reports/Case Series

Written patient consent for publication is required for publication of all Case Reports/Case Series. A statement concerning patient consent should be inserted at the beginning of the case description. These requirements also apply when submitting case reports as a letter to the editor.

If the patient is a minor, or if the patient does not have mental capacity, then written consent from either the legal guardian or power of attorney may be acceptable. We kindly request that authors complete and return the standardized patient consent form that can be downloaded from the Journal’s homepage at: http://springer.com/12630.
