Tables and figures: The total number of tables and figures for the main text is limited to 10.
Original research
To present original research findings that represent a significant advance in understanding or technology. Articles must demonstrate rigorous methodology, robust data analysis, and clear implications for the field. Materials and methods should be included in the main text. Supplemental materials and methods can be included in the supplemental information, which should also include information needed to support the paper's conclusions. 2. Cover letter
Should include the following:
● The title of the manuscript and whether it is an original submission or a re-submission;
● A highlight that contains 3 to 5 short sentences to state the core findings of the research described in the paper;
● All authors agree with the submission;
● The work has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere, including in another form or language;
● Please declare all figures, tables and data that are reproduced from other publications; the authors have to obtain authorization from the copyright holders (usually the publisher) for their use, and should include this authorization form with their submission;
● Please state if the word counts conform to the required word limits;
● Statement of Competing Interests.
3. Organization of Manuscripts
3.1 Initial Submission
The submission should contain the following:
(1) Cover letter;
(2) Manuscript;
(3) Supplementary materials (if applicable);
(4) Consent to publish form (When submitting an article that involves patient data, identifiable information, or images, you should upload the patient consent form at the time of submission.).

For initial submissions (i.e. NOT revised manuscripts), we strongly suggest you insert all figures and tables into an appropriate position (the same or next page of the first citation) in the main text (Microsoft Word) to facilitate the review process. The figure legends, and table captions should be inserted immediately above or below the figures and tables, respectively. Supplementary materials should be appended to the end of the References, with the supplemental tables and figures being embedded or stand alone. Finally, the manuscript should include continuous line numbers and page numbers to facilitate commenting. Manuscripts following the outlined format will expedite the review process.
If your supplemental materials contain data sets (e.g. Microsoft Excel files) that are difficult to provide in an all-inclusive single file, the following options are available:
(1) submit a single master file in the format as mentioned above, plus one or several data files (in Microsoft Excel) that could not be incorporated into the master file;
(2) submit all files separately.
In both cases, the file submission system will generate a single PDF file with the data (in Microsoft Excel) to be hyperlinked. Eventually, the manuscript should be in a single PDF that contains all figures, tables, supplementary materials, and hyperlinked data for review.
3.2 Research reporting guidelines
Energy & Environment Nexus emphasizes the importance of complete and accurate research reporting to ensure that readers can fully comprehend and evaluate the study. We encourage authors to include detailed information about their research design, as it enhances the reproducibility of their findings.
Authors could find reporting guidelines for various article types and study designs, with additional checklists available on the EQUATOR Network's website. The EQUATOR library houses an extensive, searchable database of reporting guidelines and links to resources that can improve the quality of research reporting.
● Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs): Adhere to the CONSORT guidelines, which include a flowchart and a structured abstract checklist (also see: standards for clinical trial reporting).
● Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses: Follow the PRISMA guidelines, complete with a flowchart and a structured abstract checklist.
● Observational Studies in Epidemiology: Refer to the STROBE guidelines (and RECORD for studies utilizing routinely collected health data) and the MOOSE guidelines.
● Animal Pre-Clinical Studies: Use the ARRIVE guidelines.
● Web-Based Surveys: Consult the CHERRIES guidelines.
● Studies Utilizing Electronic Health Record Data: Apply the CODE-EHR guidelines.
● Reporting Sex and Gender Information: Adhere to the SAGER guidelines.
3.3 Submission of Revisions
For revised manuscripts, we recommend submitting the manuscript text, tables, figures, and any supplementary files as separate documents.
● A rebuttal letter;
● Marked-up version of the manuscript (Microsoft Word) with no figures;
● Clean (non-highlighted) version of the manuscript;
● Figures with a resolution of 300 dpi or above are expected;
● Supplementary files (Microsoft Word or Excel) are expected.
Regardless of whether this is an initial submission or resubmission, more detailed and general information for preparing a manuscript is given in the next section titled "Detailed Requirements".
3.4 Detailed Requirements
Before submitting your manuscript, please check your submission for the following:
(1) The addition of all authors into the submission system
The full names of all authors should be entered into the submission system in the same order as shown in the manuscript. Contact information including institution, address and official e-mail addresses must be provided. Please use organizational email accounts as the official author email addresses where possible, such as abc@mtu.edu.
(2) Title Page
A title page should include a succinct title (less than 250 characters), a very concise running title (which should be less than 50 characters, for example, Plant Immune Mechanisms), the full names of all authors including their given names, the affiliations and location (including city, state, country and zip/post code), the full name, and official email address(es) of the corresponding author(s).
(3) Abstract
A brief abstract up to 250 words should state the background and purpose of the research, methods (or rationale), main results and findings, and brief conclusions of the study. The abstract should not contain abbreviations or references and should not be structured. However, the abstract lengthcan be increased from the 250-word limit (to up to 450 words) if the topic dictates, and to allow full compliance with the relevant reporting guidelines
Authors are expected to provide the file of a Graphical Abstract including Highlights with the first submission for original research and review articles. Bold, left align, and capitalize the heading as shown above. A Graphical Abstract image must be uploaded during submission which, together with the article title and abstract text, should provide the reader with a visual description of the topic covered in the article. This will appear underneath to the Abstract on the website. The Graphical Abstract should be approximately 920 × 300 pixels and should be uploaded as a JPEG, PNG, PDF, TIFF, or SVG file.
