About the Project

We seek a PhD student interested in research on pattern formation in dissolving porous rocks. The interdisciplinary project involves laboratory experiments and field work on rock dissolution processes. The candidate should have physics, fluid dynamics, engineering or geosciences background and show a willingness to work in an interdisciplinary environment and with a diverse team of scientists.

The commencement date is flexible, preferably in the fall of 2022. The monthly PhD scholarship is 5000 PLN (~1000 EUR, tax-free) plus access to funds for international travel to field sites, meetings and conferences. The project is funded by CEUS-UNISONO initiative, a joint grant scheme of Polish and Slovenian grant agencies.

Description of the project

Understanding the dynamics of climate changes is important not only for reconstruction of the climatic conditions of the past but also for better prediction of climatic changes in near future. In our project, we propose to use geological structures called solution pipes as tools to reconstruct past climate. Solution pipes are nearly vertical, cylindrical forms, found in many karst areas around the world. They are formed as a result of dissolution of limestone rocks by water saturated with carbon dioxide

The shapes, lengths and spatial distribution of the pipes are the functions of physical conditions in which they were formed, with the two most important factors being the flow rate of water and temperature. The PhD student will recreate the pipes in the lab to determine the link between the experimental conditions and morphological features of the pipes. He/she will also closely collaborate with the geomorphological team and participate in the field measurement in the areas where the pipes are found (Australia, Bahamas, Italy etc). The project will be carried under a joint supervision of Piotr Szymczak (Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw, Poland) and Matej Lipar (Anton Melik Geographical Institute, Ljubljana, Slovenia).
