Author Guidelines
Guidance for Authors on the Preparation and Submission of Manuscripts to the Journal of Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases
Scope: The manuscripts submitted for publication should report original clinical and scientific human research, which contributes to the advancement of knowledge in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology. The field comprises prevention, diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disorders, as well as related molecular genetics, pathophysiology, and epidemiology.
We process manuscripts of clinical gastroenterology.
Due to limited space:
We do not publish animal experimental studies.
We do not accept for evaluation papers related to basic research, pediatric pathology or to surgical techniques.
The Journal of Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases is published quarterly.
Submission and procession of manuscripts is free of charge for authors.
Only manuscripts in English language will be accepted.
Submitting a scientific paper for publication is subject to the fulfillment of the following statements:
– the paper is original and has not been published in other journals or books; please consult the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) regarding overlapping publications;
– the paper does not infringe upon any copyright or other proprietary right;
– the manuscript has been reviewed and approved by all named authors;
If your paper contains studies on humans, you must insert in the ”Methods” section a statement mentioning the approval of the medical ethical commission of the organization in which the study was realized.
Informed consent
Please send copies of patients᾽ consent forms in which patients or relatives in case the patient cannot, or other subjects of your experiments clearly grant permission for inclusion in the study and/or the publication of photographs or other material that might identify them.
Please note that Journal of Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases is a member of COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) and failure to comply with their guidelines may lead to the rejection of the manuscript.
Types of Articles
Editorials
Editorials are invited articles or comments concerning a specific paper in the Journal or a topical issue in the field. Although editorials are normally invited or written by an Editor, we also accept unsolicited editorials. Typical length: 2000 words, 40 references. An editorial should usually have one author.
Original Articles
These may be randomized trials, intervention studies, studies of screening and diagnostic tests, laboratory studies, cohort studies, cost-effectiveness analyses, case-control studies, and surveys with high response rates, which represent new and significant contributions to the field.
Original articles should have the following structure: Background & Aims; Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, Author contributions; Acknowledgement and References. Word limit: 3500 words.
Review Articles
These should aim to provide the reader with an overview of an important and topical subject, and highlight unresolved questions and future directions. Known personalities with expertise and published studies in a specific field are invited to write reviews and editorials in our journal. Un-invited reviews will also be accepted if written by experts with publications in the field. Section headings should be: Abstract, Introduction, brief main headings, Conclusions and References.
Typical length: 4000 words, 100 references.
Meta-analyses and Systematic Reviews
PRISMA guidelines should be followed for preparation of meta-analyses and systematic reviews, and articles are subject to the usual peer review process. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews have a word limit of 5000 words, and up to 75 references and 3–7 figures or tables.
Case Reports
We accept very few and very well selected case reports.These are short discussions of a case or case series with unique features not previously described that make an important teaching point or scientific observation. Section headings should be: Abstract, Introduction, Case Report, Discussion, Conclusion, Acknowledgements (if applicable), References.
Case reports should include the general data of the case, medical history, family history, chief complaint, present illness, clinical manifestation, methods of diagnosis and treatment, and outcome. Typical length: 1500 words, 30 references. Case reports should not have more than 5 authors deserving really authorship. Other contributors can be acknowledged.

The Journal of Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases is on the list of journals that follow the ICMJE’s Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals. Images of the Issue
These are short presentations of particular cases. They include 2-3 figures of high quality (300 PPI resolution), representing clinical, pathologic (gross or microscopic), endoscopic, or radiographic aspects. Typical length: 250-300 words, 5-6 references. Images should not have more than 5 authors deserving really authorship. Other contributors can be acknowledged.
Letters to the Editor
These include brief constructive comments concerning recently published articles in the journal. Letters should have a title and include appropriate references, and include the corresponding author‘s e-mail address. Letters might also present a short preliminary study. They will be sent for peer review. Typical length: 600 words, 5 references; 1 table and/or 1 figure may be included. Letters should not have more than 5 authors deserving really authorship.
Preparing the manuscripts
The manuscript should be written in a concise style, and should contain the strictly necessary number of pages, figures and tables. For submitting a manuscript in electronic format the following conditions must be fulfilled: – the text should be sent as a Word document, in 12p Times New Roman fonts, 1.5 line spacing. Use only standard abbreviations; the full term for which an abbreviation stands should precede its first use in the text.
In the title and the abstract the abbreviations should be avoided;
– the tables should be numbered with Roman numerals according to the order in which they are mentioned in the text;
– the illustrations / figures should be submitted as separate files named with the corresponding number (e.g. „Figure 1”).
The following formats for figure files are accepted:
• EPS for diagrams / vector images
• JPEG or TIFF for photographs and screen dumps at a resolution of 300 dpi.
Figures that are submitted in colour will be published with reproduction costs (20€ or 24 USD per figure).
– the legend for figures, with Arabic numerals in order of appearance in the text, should be placed on a separate page at the end of the manuscript, after the References.
– the supplementary material should be provided in a single pdf file.
In case of the reproduction of previously published parts or figures, it is necessary to attach the written consent of the author as well as of the publishing house where it was originally published, including the source.
The names of the patients should be concealed on all illustrations; patients in all photos should have a black band over their eyes in order to prevent their identification.
Structure of the manuscript
Any identifiable information should be removed, such as: authors᾽ names, department or institution, or e-mail addresses. The authors‘ information should be separated from the article (in the Title Page - see below) to ensure a blind peer review process.
Title of the paper followed by the Abstract (on a distinct page) precedes the text body. The abstract should be structured into the same sections as the paper.
Key words. five to seven key words will be written for every paper. Please use Medical Subject Headings (the National Library of Medicine‘s controlled vocabulary thesaurus used for indexing articles for PubMed).

References. Please include the works cited in the paper, according to their occurrence in the text, inserted between square brackets [ ]. Titles of medical journals should be abbreviated according to the Index Medicus. List all authors up to six, using six and „et al.” when the number is greater than six.
Authors are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of their references and for correct text citation! Please add doi whenever possible.
The following format should be used for listed references: Article in print journal: Nasrad , Schoen RE. Prevalence of adenocarcinoma at esophagectomy for Barrett’s esophagus with high grade dysplasia.

Title Page
The authors will prepare a separate Title Page file in Microsoft Word format, containing:
- article type (Editorial, Original Article, Review Article, Systematic Review, Meta-Analyse, Case Report, Letter to the Editor)
- full title of the article - in sentence case,
- short title
- words count (excluding abstract, acknowledgement, figure legends, and references)
- the authors with their affiliations (numbered, the numbers being in superscript - department name, institution, city, country), the corresponding author marked with *,
- the corresponding author contact details (*Correspondence: name, email address),
- conflict of interest statement for each author,
- acknowledgements,
- the Authors' contributions (see below). Authors' contributions. The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors Recommendations consider that authorship is based on the following four criteria:"Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; AND
Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content; AND
Final approval of the version to be published; AND
Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved." Please specify each author’s contribution to the paper in the Title Page file, using the words describing your contribution mentioned above, and making sure all four criteria are fulfilled. Besides the words specified above you can use other words detailing and clarifying better each author contribution. (e.g. Authors' contributions S.H. the concept and design of the study; A.A, T.D., and D.A. data acquisition; T.J. statistical analysis; K.W. performed the DNA extraction and genotyping in the laboratory, interpreted the results; T.M. analyzed the data and drafted the manuscript. All authors critically revised the manuscript, approved the final version to be published, and agree to be accountable for all aspects of the work.) We recommend an ethical attribution of authorship and do not recommend formulations like: "both authors" or "all authors" equally contributed except really sensational manuscripts. Senior authors should always be mentors or head of units. We do not recommend sharing of seniority in the same manuscript.
Specific recommendations
If the paper presents the results of observational studies, read the STROBE statement, if the paper reports a clinical trial read the CONSORT statement (publication of clinical trials will be considered only for those registered in a public trials registry). If the paper is reporting the results of a diagnostic study, read the STARD statement, if the paper is reporting the results of a clinical case, read the CARE statement.
Specific recommendations
The manuscripts should be written according to the following reporting guidelines: for observational studies, the STROBE statement; for clinical trials, the CONSORT statement; for diagnostic studies, the STARD statement; for systematic reviews, the PRISMA statement; for clinical cases, the CARE statement. Other reporting guidelines may also be used if they are more appropriate to your study, then the ones listed before (see www.equator-network.org).
Online manuscript submission
Go to www.jgld.ro, click on Submission menu, or clik on Make a submission button and read the guidelines. In order to make a submission you need to register for an account. You will use your account log-in and password each time you return to the site. In case you forget the password, use the button Forgot password. After you log on, in your Dashboard, the Submission section, click on New submission and start to submit the manuscript following the instructions. You should propose three or more reviewers in the Comments for the Editor field. Reviewers should be personalities with published papers in the field, from different cities and diverse countries, in order to avoid any possible conflict of interest.
Once in our system, the manuscript is assigned a tracking number and you will receive a confirmation letter. As soon as the reviewers’ comments are ready, you will receive a letter from the editor confirming acceptance, inviting you to revise your manuscript, or informing you that the manuscript cannot be accepted for publication.
Peer-review procedure
The Editor-in-chief or one of the editors first reads the manuscripts received and decides upon their priority level: some are immediately sent to the reviewers, some are rejected without being sent for review and some are returned to authors with suggestions for improvement before submitting them to reviewers. Manuscripts will be checked for plagiarism using the sistemantiplagiat.ro.
All original papers are anonymously reviewed by two or three independent reviewers. The reviewers send their comments to the Editor. The Editor will inform the authors about the suggestions made by the referee and ask them to answer the questions and make the required corrections.
The revised manuscript should be returned in no more than two months to the Editor. When the Editor receives the corrected version with all changes marked, accompanied by the reply letter to the reviewers, he sends those back to the same reviewers, who make the final recommendation for acceptance or rejection of the manuscript. The Editor’s decision is final and will not be subject of further correspondence for manuscripts considered unsuitable for publication.
Open access
All original articles, reviews, editorials and case reports published in the journal are available online for all to read and use free of charge.
