Instructions for Authors

Hypertension publishes scientific investigation of the highest quality in the broad field of blood pressure regulation and pathophysiology, clinical treatment, and prevention of hypertension. The editors encourage submission of original articles that deal with studies of hypertension and related fields such as nephrology, endocrinology, neuroscience, vascular biology, physiology, pharmacology, cellular and molecular biology, and genetics:

Basic Science

Research includes animal experiments, cell studies, biochemical, genetic and physiological investigations, and studies on the properties of drugs and materials. It also includes the development and improvement of analytical procedures, imaging procedures, gene sequencing, and the development of biometric procedures.

Clinical Science

Clinical research involves interactions with patients, diagnostic clinical materials or data, or populations in any of the following areas: (1) disease mechanisms (etiopathogenesis); (2) bi-directional integrative (translational) research; (3) clinical knowledge, detection, diagnosis and natural history of disease; (4) therapeutic interventions including clinical trials of drugs, biologics, devices and instruments; (5) prevention (primary and secondary) and health promotion; (6) behavioral research; and (7) health services research, including outcomes, and cost-effectiveness.

Population Science

Epidemiology is the science that investigates the patterns, causes, and effects of health versus disease in populations or patient cohorts. This involves, but is not limited to: (1) quantification and control of morbidity and mortality; (2) high-throughput “omics” and deep DNA sequencing; (3) longitudinal observations; (4) natural experiments (Mendelian randomization); (5) validation of potential disease-causing mechanisms identified in experimental studies and generating hypotheses for mechanisms to be tested in experimental studies; (6) use of “big data”, registries and “eHealth platforms”; and (7) systems biology and pathway analysis for integrating clinical with molecular data.

Submitted manuscripts must not contain material previously published, except as an abstract, and must not be under consideration for publication elsewhere, in whole or in part. Manuscripts should conform to "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals" (N Engl J Med. 1991; 324:424-428). Manuscripts are examined by the editors and are usually sent to expert reviewers. Decisions will generally be communicated within 3 weeks after receipt of the manuscript. Acceptance is based on originality, scientific excellence, and topical balance of the journal.

Manuscript Submissions

Preubmission Inquires: In general, the editorial policy of Hypertension is not to respond to presubmission inquiries. If there are questions regarding submission, authors should direct them to the Editorial Office at hypertension@heart.org. Authors should submit their manuscripts for formal peer review at the Hypertension submission site after following all of the guidelines listed in these Instructions to Authors.

Online Submissions: To submit your original or revised manuscript, please go to the Hypertension submisison site and follow the detailed instructions located on our submission website. If you have any questions about the online submission process, please feel free to contact the Editorial Office at hypertension@heart.org. If you do not receive confirmation of submission for a new manuscript within three days, please contact the Editorial Office. The following items should be uploaded at the time of submission:

A cover letter that includes a statement of submission: "All authors have read and approved the submission of the manuscript; the manuscript has not been published and is not being considered for publication elsewhere, in whole or in part, in any language, except as an abstract." The cover letter may include the names of six to eight potential reviewers, with address, email address, and fax number, who are experts in the area of research and who do not have a conflict of interest. It is especially helpful to suggest three to four members of the Editorial Board. (Please note suggested reviewers should not be from the same institution as any of the authors of the manuscript.)

Any potentially overlapping work that is in preparation, has been previously submitted or published, or is in-press, if applicable.

Any article currently in-press, which is cited in the References, if applicable.

Any abstracts published or submitted for publication, if applicable.

Notes: All sources of support must be cited. Authorship Responsibility and Copyright Transfer Agreement is needed for all authors on revised and accepted manuscripts only. All potential conflicts of interest related to the manuscript must be stated. Conflict of Interest Disclosure Questionnaire must be completed by each author on our submission site. This form is available to all authors after the submission of the first revision.

Review Process: Manuscripts submitted to Hypertension are examined by the editors, who typically recruit three expert reviewers. Papers are carefully evaluated in terms of novelty, importance, methodology, and broad interest to the readership. When appropriate, articles are also subjected to statistical review. Decisions are communicated by email.

Appeals: It is editorial policy that the editors will not discuss a decision or appeal regarding a manuscript over the phone. All rebuttals must be formally submitted in written email to the editorial office at hypertension@heart.org. Please note that only one appeal is allowed per manuscript and manuscripts with a most recent decision of "Reject DeNovo" are not given appeal consideration.
