American Journal of Medical Quality (AJMQ)

Instructions for Authors

The American Journal of Medical Quality is the official journal of the American College of Medical Quality. AJMQ is focused on keeping readers informed of the resources, processes, and perspectives contributing to quality health care services. This peer-reviewed journal presents a forum for the exchange of ideas, strategies, and methods in improving the delivery and management of health care.

Please note that the following criteria must met before submitting to the American Journal of Medical Quality: the material is original, the writing is clear, the study methods are appropriate, the data are valid, the conclusions are reasonable and supported by the data, the information is important, and the topic has general medical quality interest. A paper’s eligibility for publication will be assessed based on these basic criteria.

AJMQ performs single-blind peer review. This means that the reviewer’s name is unknown to the submitting author.

Manuscripts are considered with the understanding that they have not been published previously in print or electronic format, and are not under consideration by another publication or electronic medium, except in the form of an abstract of not more than 400 words. Prior abstract presentations should be described in a footnote to the title. Submissions should be accompanied by a letter requesting evaluation for publication.

All manuscript text files must contain:

A complete title page.

An abstract.

The text.

Acknowledgments, if any.

A comprehensive author contribution statement.

Conflict of interest disclosures for all authors, even if there are no conflicts.

Funding disclosures for all authors, even if there was no funding.

References in AMA style.

Details on required elements are below.

All manuscripts should be submitted Word format (in AMA style). They should be double spaced with ample margins on all sides. Research articles should not be written in first person. Note that first person is only appropriate for Perspectives/Editorials and Letters to the Editor.

An original manuscript should be no more than 3,500 words, excluding abstract, tables/figures, and references. It may include up to 5 tables or figures (total), and up to 40 references. Perspectives or Editorials should be no more than 1300 words or 1000 words with 1 small table or figure, excluding references. A maximum of 10 references.

The title page should include the authors’ names, professional and/or academic degree information (bachelor’s or higher), and affiliations, the source of a work or study (if any), and a running title of approximately 45 characters. Please include the full mailing address and contact information (telephone, fax, e-mail address, and alternate address) for the corresponding author listed on your article. This information should appear on the title page or on a separate sheet. Include full names and e-mail addresses for all coauthors.

The title page should be followed by an abstract of not more than 150 words, which should be self-explanatory without reference to the text. Reference citations are not permitted in the abstract of a paper. Number pages consecutively. At the end of the paper, give the name and address of the individual to whom reprint requests should be directed.

Conflict of Interest

It is the policy of AJMQ to require a declaration of conflicting interests from all authors enabling a statement to be carried within the paginated pages of all published articles. A Declaration of Conflicting Interests statement needs to be included at the end of your manuscript, after any acknowledgements and prior to the references. If no conflict exists, please state that” The Author(s) declare(s) that there is no conflict of interest.”

For guidance on conflict of interest statements, please see the ICMJE recommendations.

Failure to include this information will delay the review process. Each author's disclosure will be published.

Funding

AJMQ requires all authors to acknowledge their funding in a consistent fashion under a separate heading. Confirm the format of the acknowledgment text in the event of funding, or state that: This research received no specific grant from any funding agency in the public, commercial, or not-for-profit sectors. The funding information should be included at the end of the manuscript, after the Conflict of Interest disclosure and before the references.

Research Ethics and Informed Consent

Medical research involving human subjects must be conducted according to the World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki.

Submitted manuscripts should conform to the ICMJE Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals, and all papers reporting animal and/or human studies must state in the methods section that the relevant Ethics Committee or Institutional Review Board provided (or waived) approval. Please ensure that you have provided the full name and institution of the review committee, in addition to the approval number.

For research articles, authors are also required to state in the methods section whether participants provided informed consent and whether the consent was written or verbal.

Figures

Learn about the publication requirements for Digital Artwork: http://links.lww.com/ES/A42.

Create, Scan and Save your artwork and compare your final figure to the Digital Artwork Guideline Checklist (below). Upload each figure to Editorial Manager in conjunction with your manuscript text and tables. Each Figure must stand alone.

Artwork should be saved as TIFF, PDF, Word Doc, PPT, or EPS files.

Artwork is created as the actual size (or slightly larger) it will appear in the Journal. (To get an idea of the size images should be when they print, study a copy of the Journal to which you wish to submit. Measure the artwork typically shown and scale your image to match.)

Crop out any white or black space surrounding the image.

Diagrams, drawings, graphs, and other line art must be vector or saved at a resolution of at least 1200 dpi. If the art is created in an MS Office program, convert to a hi-res PDF. If the PDF creation process is unfamiliar then submit the MS Office doc.

Photographs, radiographs and other halftone images must be saved at a resolution of at least 300 dpi.

Photographs and radiographs with text must be saved as postscript or at a resolution of at least 600 dpi.

Each figure must be saved and submitted as a separate file. Figures should not be embedded in the manuscript text file.
